My girl bunny was spayed one week ago and I was wondering how long I should wait until I can begin the bonding process with my neutered male. They have been side by side in separate xpens for several months now, they seem comfortable and accustomed to one another so I would consider them pre-bonded. But I know that they can get a hormone spike after getting fixed, and that just because they seem calm in prebonding does not mean that they will get along right away when trying to bond them.

How long should I wait before I can start bonding them?

Give it another 1-2 months. Females are the worst with hormones and can take up to 6 months for them to die down. Also, if she was spayed a week ago she still needs more time to heal because it’s more invasive than a neuter. She really shouldn’t be moving around outside of her enclosure until she’s healed. So definitely give it a little bit and continue to swap litter trays between their enclosures or swap them between enclosures.

I would say you can give it a go a month after a spay, but if she still seems hormonal then stop and wait a bit longer.

You should also spend this month swapping them between hutches – even though they’ve been side by side and seem accustomed to each other, the hutch swapping is important so that they lose a sense of territoriality.
