Hello, I have a small bunbun who is almost turning 6 months in a couple of days.

She recently developed “cherry eye” after a month of me going on vacation.

She had it for 2 weeks or a bit longer, my brother who had been cleaning and helping her has been washing her eye with distilled water and putting a warm damp cloth and massaging her eye.

She;s been eating, going to the washroom, and running well. She has no breathing problems either.

Should I buy treatment or should I take her to the vet?

The only way is by bus, which is usually 40-1 hour bus ride *no vets in my area sees rabbits and most are too far, I do not have a car*

Over the days, it seems to be less swollen and less red than before.

Here are some pictures. Please be advised these might be “a bit graphic!”

          Hi Bunbun, welcome to BB!

It does look like cherry eye in the pictures. Cherry eye is a prolapse of the harderian gland. Rabbits with cherry eye will suffer from dry eye and irritation. If it doesn’t go back in through massage or by itself, then surgery is required.

Hello! Thank you for welcoming me.

I was wondering should I keep massaging the eye with warm water? Its been almost 3 weeks and it is still like that, but it seems less red/pink from before (2nd week during the cherry eye.) And it was also a bit less swollen/less bigger.

Usually how long does it take to go back?

I was wondering if I should just go to the vet, i’m scared she might get blind or something else might happen since I am not there.

If it’s been that long, then it’s probably time to have a vet take a look. They may be able to ease it back in.

I realize she only developed it because she was pregnant. I have been informed she had 4 babies.

From the pictures, it looks like it’s going back to normal and her eyes aren’t at the corner, but being in place now.

But i’m still not sure if I should wait it out, a choice going to the vet might not be the best, the bus ride is 30-40 minutes, i’m scared she might be frightened and her condition might worsen especially she just gave birth.

I will wait for a while to see, since after giving birth, it became significantly better (looks more normal than before).

But thank you for the responses/advice! If it’s not changing, i’ll immediately go to the vet, but i’m not sure how to put her on the bus with tons of people.

Last time I brought her out in the carrier and it was 15minutes, she pooped in her whole carrier! But after getting back home, she was back to normal and was not scared.
