Hello! I have a male (neutered) bunny who will be turning 2 next month. I adopted him at around 6 months old from the SPCA. He has never been particularly affectionate, but he was finally getting to the point where I could brush him, clip his nails, and give him haircuts (he has very long fur that gets matted quite easily) without him being too nervous. About 2 months ago I noticed he was being extremely inactive, and then he seemed to have a uti. I took him to the vet where he was diagnosed with GI Stasis and put on antibiotics, painkillers, and critical care for 2 weeks. Obviously he didn’t take any of it willingly and I had to spend about 30 minutes every morning and evening for 2 weeks holding him and pushing syringes into his mouth to get all the meds into his system, plus extra times every day for the critical care (which he hated even though it was banana flavored )

Long story short, it’s been a little over a week since his medication has been over and done with. He seems to be feeling better, he was running around this morning, jumping, chasing the cats, like he always does. However, every time I come near him now he growls, lunges and bites me, assumingly because he’s not happy I forced him to take meds for two weeks. The other day he bit my hand and drew a decent amount of blood for a rabbit bite. I have tried yelping, not flinching, giving him lots of affection (and what treats he’s allowed) etc. But he just seems to hate me now. He’s fine with my boyfriend who co-owns him with me but didn’t have to do any of the medicating. I can’t even step into his pen without having my feet & ankles attacked now. It’s miserable. Is this something that time will heal or is there something else I can do to help regain his trust?

I think it’s probably a bit of both time and action to regain trust. Were you doing anything to him when he bit you?

Have you tried feeding him some of his favourite treats? Perhaps you could try standing outside the pen and reaching in to give him his treat, instead of stepping into the pen itself?
