I’m honestly furious. My rabbit Bonnie is a Emotional Support Animal (ESA) that comes to college with me. This year I was hired to be the resident assistant on the pet friendly floor and I was so excited! Until I read the agreement. “Animals that are allowed out of the cage at any time must wear a collar with the owner’s phone number permanently attached (embroidered into the collar or on a tag attached to the collar).” This was under the rabbits and caged animals section. This was never a rule when she was with me as an ESA on different floors and a collar could kill her. I’m just really upset that they’d enforce this without thinking it through. I’m not just going to keep her in her cage all the time so I’m going to have to find a solution. I don’t even put a harness on her out of fear she’ll hurt herself. Any suggestions? I’ve already emailed the director of residents so hopefully he’ll respond soon.

Maybe you could try multiple harnesses to see what she likes. Harnesses can be very controversial in the bunny world, so make sure you do your research on them before use. Find the best one and see how your bunny reacts.

Could you use a break-away collar, that would easily come undone if caught on something?

I did find a breakaway collar relatively easily, but I’m honestly more concerned about her skin getting irritated or her trying to kick the collar off and breaking a claw or even worse a bone. I have a harness for her but she HATES it. It came with her form the shelter and looked like it had been used but she does not like it at all.

Is there a way you can keep a pen so when you walk in your room you have a foot and then you half to walk over it to actually get in your place? then you would only need to collar her when you take her outside? Not to be devious but they won’t know what is going on behind your door and you can share the importance of how dangerous collars are for prey anaimals because as you know, they can get so scared if they get stuck that they can have a heart attack and die.She would probably be in a carrier anyways outside of your place so she wouldn’t need to wear one.

What if you microchip her so she will always have your information in her if she were to get lost or go on a running spree down the hall?

I have an x-pen she’s in now so I might do just that, blocking it off wall to wall. I would also consider micro chipping her much faster than I would collaring her. I’ve emailed the director detailing the dangers and asking for an alternative, so hopefully he’ll be receptive.

Actually now that I think about it, my friend with a cat tried something similar and they told her it was a fire hazard so I’m not sure I’d be allowed. Granted, I am an RA, but I don’t want to break rules I’m enforcing.

I hope the best for you and you can even send them links that show how dangerous it is for bunnies to have collars and you can even have a vet or two vouch for you!
