        Hi All,
Back in January I ordered a 50 lb oxbow box of Timothy hay from a local pet store. I was very happy with the quality of the hay, it was grass like and green. At the time I just had Guinea pigs and they loved it, and when I acquired my bunny in May he loved it too. I ordered a second box of Timothy hay from the same store and started it on Sunday. I immediately noticed that this hay was different, it was more straw like and brown with lots of seed pods. Anyway, bunny won’t eat it at all. And yesterday, for the first time, he started chewing on my furniture. I know he is still healthy because I had a little bit if the old hay left and when I gave it to him last night he ate it all right away. I’m going to call the pet store today but does anyone have any idea of why the two boxes are so different? I’m wondering what to do now when ordering the 50lb boxes from Oxbow (obviously I plan to pick up a bag of orchard grass hay or something today to get us through for a bit) and how to avoid this in the future?

Grass hay is a crop. Crops are dependent on many variables, such as the weather. So distributors will sometimes end up with good batches and not so great batches. I’ve had similar unfortunate experiences and didn’t even have the option to return (because I lived too far away at the time).

If you have Oxbow brand try and get in touch with the company. A lot of the time they will try to give you a refund or a discount if you get a bad bag of hay, and that’s what it sounds like happened to you. I try and check each bag the store has in stock when I go to pick up a new bag so I can get the one that is the greenest. You might also be able to return the bag to the store for a new one. Like Q8bunny said, hay depends on a lot of variables so it can be hard to get consistently good hay. Sometimes you can find some local hay that is good depending on where you live. Good luck!
