I have a 3 month old mini lop or Holland lop. Not sure since she is still a baby. I know that baby buns are supposed to have unlimited pellets, but it kind of seems to me that she is getting a little chubby… I was wondering if I should give her unlimited of portion her pellets? P.S. her name is Flops. Thank you in advance!!!

          Hi Dillpickle!

Congrats on your new bunny! You’re right that lots of people recommend unlimited pellets for baby bunnies, but sometimes it does have to be limited. In practice, unlimited should never be truly unlimited anyway! Do you know roughly how much she’s currently eating?

The most important thing is that rabbits eat hay, so as soon as her pellet consumption starts to interfere with her hay consumption, you should start to reduce pellets. She should always have unlimited hay (some people advise alfalfa for baby buns, but if she has alfalfa based baby pellets then regular timothy or meadow is just fine. adults have to be weaned off alfalfa as its too fattening for their permanent diet) and should eat a pile roughly the size of herself each day. Then, I would serve her a portion of pellets twice a day – perhaps 1/4 cup each time? Depending how much she’s been eating so far.

You can check out the BUNNY INFO section for loads more info on bunnies that might be useful to you

Hi Sirius and Luna! I feed her probably 1/4 -1/2 a cup of pellets a day with unlimited hay. It depends how much she begs…?

That sounds about right for a young bunny, but if you think she’s getting chubby then just start to slowly cut it down. Does she eat lots of hay?
