Hi guys, you might remember that I had some gurgling tummies, a few excess cecals amd some sticky poop. The only food that had changed was some lucious looking oat hay. I stopped with the oat for a weekish and heard very little gurgling, had no excess cecals and only one sticky poop (it left residue on my hands but didn’t have a stringy substance on it) I reintroduce oat again 3 days ago and lo and behold I hear a little gurgling, Peanut did some strange poops (he is moulting though) that left residue on my hands AND i found 2 spots on the floor which I assume to be cecal juice

They love the oat hay and they eat all of it however it has A LOT of seed heads which I’m wondering is maybe too rich for them? They’ve had Burns oat hay before with no issues but that never had as many seed heads.

As I think you already know, oat is an especially rich (high protein, low fibre) type of grass, so with the extra protein from the seeds it may well be too much. It sounds like there’s something in it that’s upsetting their tums, anyway might be best to cut it out (or heavily restrict it) rather than risk GI upsets?

I am cutting it out completely. It’s just a shame I’ve got half a 7kg bag of it plus another 7kg

That’s a drag! Maybe you could donate it to a local rescue

                These two and their tummies!

It feels like their tummies are getting more and more sensitive

I gave Panda and Fernando plain rolled oats as an evening treat for a few months, but had to cut it out of their diets in May when I found out they’d been gaining too much weight in consequence.
