Hi there! I just got myself a new baby netherland dwarf, Floof, born on the 9th of May 2018, and I have a couple of questions

        1. How often should I send my bunny to the vet for general health checkup?

        2. Is there any vaccinations I should be doing? (Floof is an indoor rabbit)

        3. How often should I cut my bunny’s nails?

        4. I just got her to be littertrained, is it ok to change out the bedding once every 2 weeks? I have an open area aside from the cage that the bunny is free to roam at and she doesn’t use the cage often except to eat and drink.

        5. Any advice on how to prevent my bunny from chewing the board at the wall?

        Thanks alot!

Congrats on the new bunny!! Very accurate name for a rabbit :p

          1) most vets recommend every 6months for check ups. Some rabbits need more, but a healthy happy bunny should see a vet at least twice a year just to be sure

          2) Depending where you live:yes. Some countries do some vaccines and some dont so this answer reflects where I’m from (UK and Ireland) here we vaccinate against myxomatosis and VHD (RHD) one and two. We generally use a combined vaccine for myxo and VHD(RHD) one and a separate one for RHD 2. Myxo and rhd 1 is a once a year vaccine and the RHD2 can be one year or 6 months depending on the brand. Even indoor rabbits need vaccines in countries that are at risk as they are very contagious and can survive on people’s clothes

          3) bunnies nails grow at different rates , and some wear them down better than others-some will never need them trimmed, others will need frequent trimmings, the average is about 6 weeks.

          4) depends on the bedding and the weather, I clean mine at least once a week-sonetimes more. Simply to keep down the risk of flystrike, which I am very paranoid about and because my rabbits sometimes dig their litter if it’s not clean (hooligans)

          5) cover the board. I tried all sorts of apple cider, and butter sprays and none of it detered a determined bunny ! I simply blocked it off so they couldn’t chew it. Sometimes if you break the habit , they’ll stop bothering to chew it when you finally remove the block, sometimes, the minute they’ve access again they are straight back to chewing.
My rabbits have hundreds of things to chew on- store bought, hand made, different t types of wood, cardboard, loofah, every kind of rabbit safe material I could find, and they still eat the plaster board off the wall at every opportunity. So now it’s just blocked :p

Hope that helps a bit !

            1. I think once or twice a year is good provided that there aren’t any signs of illness throughout the whole year.

            2. There aren’t vaccinations available where I am so like Dface said, it depends on your location.

            3. It depends on the growth rate. If you hear the sound of bunny nails when they run about or if you see the nails sticking beyond the fur, then it’s probably time for a trim. Some people trim more often so they keep the quick down for easier subsequent trimming.

            4. Once every two weeks is a bit too long to wait. I have a Netherland Dwarf too and I have to change his litter every 2-3 days because bunnies pee/poop A LOT.

            5. You could try getting wire grids to block them off

The BUNNY INFO section has some pretty good stuff for first time bunny owners – I highly recommend reading it!

I don’t have any new answers for you. You already got great suggestions. I just want to say Congratulations on Floof. Bunnies can be characters.

I can’t really answer any of this questions except for 4.

                  4. I assume you mean how often to clean your rabbit’s litter box. It depends how big the rabbit’s box is, but I find that if you try to clean it out only once every 2 weeks it might have too many unpleasant cocoa pebbles and pee. It might smell also. I would recommend once every 1 week. I clean my rabbit’s every other day, or sometimes everyday just to keep it clean and nice.
