So Julep lives in the finished room in the basement of the house (she gets the coolest room in the whole house!). This bunny wonderland is known as the “rabitat” or rabbit habitat. This summer I have noticed that it is very hard to keep the room from getting smelly and was hoping for some ideas on what to do. I have an air purifier going 24/7 and change the filters regularly. Her litterbox gets changed every 2 days and I am using the same pellets in her box as I always have. I am also using a dehumidifier every other night since the basement can feel damp. I don’t want to use it every night because it causes the temperature of the room to go up and I’d like for things to stay cool for Julep. Regular room cleaning happens once a week. I have tried putting baking soda in the bottom of her litterbox under the litter but didn’t notice a difference. I’m at my wits end trying to keep the smell at bay! Luckily she just got a new bunch of dried lavender so that is helping but not solving the problem. I would appreciate any suggestions. Oh, the floor is carpeted if that makes a difference. What does everyone do to keep their bunny spaces from smelling?

I think you better check to see if she urinated on the carpet. My baby bunny Nesquick is starting to make my room stink and I think it could be because of that.

My best advice personally to keep it from not smelling like bunny as mine doesn’t and I have 4 is I use pine wood pellets as bedding and a peepee pad in the litter box and change everyday. I also have those plastic mesh sheets that you use with small bits of string to make yarn rugs with and I put that on top of the litter and it helps keep less pee off their feet as pee on their feet will soak into anything soft you have. I also keep a memory foam bath mat i front of their box so they step on it when they get out and catches most of the pee. I change their fleece padding every couple of days and use vinegar and water to clean the flooring so there is no pee smell. I also use a air purifier but it has no change on anything.

I know I was always confused because I cleaned so much it still smelled but now you can’t smell them

Is she spayed? Sometimes hormonal bunnies have much smellier pee. You can also try adding some apple cider vinegar WITH the mother to her drinking water, which supposedly makes their pee smell better! I haven’t tried it myself.

I can vouch apple cider vinegar with the mother in water nullifies pee scent. The mother is nice because it helps balance gut health

Thanks for the tips everyone! She is spayed so that isn’t this issue. I will try adding some apple cider vinegar to her water and see if that helps. I know my own mom swears by the stuff! And getting a mat for in front of her litterbox is a brilliant idea! She always shoots poops out of her box if she jumps out too fast so it will be easier to clean that as well. Does having a mesh over the litter hurt their feet at all? I have a different litter box with a mesh on it but since she spends so much time in there I didn’t want it to give her sore feet.

The mesh doesn’t hurt mine! It’s supper flexible so it moves as they do in there. My 10 pounder doesn’t get sore hocks from it so I would say it’s a good idea! And you can buy them at Joann’s for $1 so you don’t loose a lot if she decides she doesn’t like it.
