Storm is going to get spayed tomorrow and I have a few questions for the after spay care. Obviously I need to limit the things that she can jump onto but how much do I need to limit the size she can hop around in? Do I need to worry about her doing a sprint and opening up the stitches? What if she gets excited and decides to do a binky?

You should keep her confined to a cage or a small enclosure. She shouldn’t run around and do binkies until she’s properly healed. It takes 14 days for the internal wounds to heal.

She can have supervised playtime after 5 days -a week. Make sure your vet sends you home with pain meds.

Many, many safe spaying-vibes for (((((Storm)))))

Storm has been dropped off at the vet. The vet should be giving me hour updates. Fingers crossed that she makes a speedy recovery.

Storm is up and about after her spay, now I’m just waiting to hear from the vet for the next step.

The vet just got back to me. For some reason Storm’s uterus was unusually small for her size but everything else was fully developed. They aren’t keeping her overnight but she is coming home with pain medication. Everything else is fine.

Shock of shocks, Storm doesn’t want to eat her hay or greens. Looks like I’m getting up in the middle of the night to give her critical care
Hopefully she regains her appetite quickly.

How long does it normally take for a bunny to return to normal eating habits after a spay? I’m guessing it will be at least 3 days.

Up to three days is perfectly normal, but she should start to eat something voluntarily within this time. Anything, from fragrant herbs to actual treats.

It’s also important to try and keep track of output. She will poop less because she’s eating less, but she must stop pooping completely.

So far the only thing she has eaten voluntarily is a piece of papaya. Other than that it has been ~2-3 tablespoons of Critical Care every 6 hours. Is that enough to prevent GI stasis?

Here is a chart with recommended dosage of CC:
                                http://www.oxbowcareers.com/resources/dyn/files/634734z8d313231/_fn/Critical+Care+feeding+chart+10-11-2011.pdf

Tge chart is for animals that eat nothing but CC. Of course cut down on the amount when she starts eating other food as well.

It’s very good that she’s eaten a piece of papaya! Keep trying to entice her with appetizing food. That she eats is mote important now than what she eats.

Also make sure she keeps warm, food is important for body temperature.

It took my girl (she was spayed two weeks ago today) a good 3 days before her apatite even resembled normal…
Scared the crap out of me! (And I was also prepared for her not wanting to eat from other peoples posts about this… BUT it’s still stressful!)

I spent HOURS the next day just waving a bit of Kale and other veggies in front of her face until she would get annoyed and go to grab it out of my hand in anger and would end up eating some lol. I even went and bought a small bag of Alphalfa Hay and a few other new kinds… i know Alphalfa isn’t good for adult bunnies but she wasn’t eating much anyway so I wasn’t worried about the extra calories.. Mixed all the hay up with her timothy and that got her munching again too.

*** I also found that her appetite came back a lot more once she was off the pain medication.

                                  How is she doing today??

I caught her grooming herself on the bunny cam but I’m going to run home during lunch to feed her. Doesn’t look like she has touched any of the hay though.

Yup! Grooming is great! Just make sure she’s not grooming her spay site like crazy lol.
She really wont want to eat with the “Cone of Shame” on.

Keep enticing her with all her favourite things! I’m of the mind set of just getting her to eat again – what ever it is – and then back to the healthy stuff once she’s eating on her own again.

When I went to feed her critical care and her pain meds she put up a fight (didn’t cause any harm to herself though). So I’m taking that as a good sign. Now I’m looking at her through the bunny cam and she has one ear down and the other straight up which makes it look like her head is tilted. One more thing to worry about now.

I’m rather concerned how quickly Storm figured out which syringe has the pain meds in it. She fights the critical care syringe but calmly accepts the metacam syringe.

Awwww they do have a very keen sense of smell. She can probably smell. Mine wouldn’t calmly accept the metacam at all, so at least thats a plus.

Is she eating more on her own at all? Or is it all the critical care?
