Hello~ So my rex rabbit is shedding but has some spots wheres much shorter hair. He is vaccinated but im not sure what for or when he got vaccinated. I got him from his last owner who said that hes vaccinated but I didn’t ask when or what for was he vaccinated. Or could it be from stress? 3 Days ago I was outside with my bun bun like usually but then came a loose dog. Dog didn’t attack him but he was curious of the bun bun. My rabbit got really scared and tried to run away but I tried to get him and calm him down but he started to scream. Gladly before it was too late I got him and a neighbour from down stairs came and helped me to open his harness and asked if he got hurt but gladly he didn’t. After that I went to home and calmed him down. He’s okay now and doesn’t have any injuires. Right now hes calmly sleeping. Or maybe its normal to have those spots with shorter hair while shedding on rex rabbits? Or could it be lack of some kind of mineral/vitamins? He eats and is active like usually. When I touch the spots then he isn’t in pain. Well it is summer and usually in here it gets to around 25-28 degrees.

He gets hay 24/7, pellets at the morning when I wake up, veggies at around 08:15 pm because when I go to school I dont have enough time to cut him veggies in the morning so I give him pellets, hay and make sure he has water. I do change the water everyday. Through out the day i give him some smaller piece of veggie or a treat and make sure he eats enough hay.

Since I couldn’t upload the pictures here then heres the link to the pictures: Spots with shorter hair

Any help or information is welcomed.

          Hi there,

Going through a heavy molt/shed can cause short spots like you describe. Some bunnies can look pretty terrible while they are molting!

Stress can trigger a heavy molt, so that could also be part of it.

As an aside, most of us do not recommend having rabbits on harnesses. I know it’s conflicting because pet shops sell rabbit harnesses, but they can hurt themselves very badly if they get frightened. It’s very lucky that he did not get seriously hurt.

If you’d like to give your rabbit some time outside, it’s much safer to use an exercise pen. You would still need to supervise and be wary of hawks etc, but that would also prevent dogs from getting to him.

Ah thank you. I was a little worried if it would’ve been more serious like an illness or something. The exercise pens cost quite some money here so I can’t really afford them. I think that my rabbit would try to jump out of it since he likes to run a lot outside and I’ve seen how high he can jump. Quite high. He also doesn’t like to be locked up. I should’ve been looked more around at that time when the dog came. He isn’t usually scared of the dogs if he sees them but only if the dogs start to attack him or chase him but here the dogs are usually outside with their owner and in leashes. Im not sure where that dog came from but it did come from somewhere. Next time when a loose dog starts to approach us or even if its a dog with its owner and I see that my bun bun starts to get a little scared then Im gonna pick him up right away and if needed then go inside. Thank you again.
