Olaf has some tiny white flakes on the back of his ears. Barely two or three specks on either ear and they only stand out because his ears are black. He’s not itching at all but is going though a marathon summer shedding session. Is it possible this dryness is from his molt or can fur mites be that mild? No lesions, redness, or loss of fur. I look through the fur on the back of his neck and nothing looks dry or flaky. Just a few tiny flakes on his ears (not inside them).

I called the vet but they don’t have any open appointments until Tuesday. I’ve been put on a wait list in case there are cancellations but that means I have to either wait until Tuesday or take him for an emergency visit which is very expensive.

I live in the U.S. and we can’t buy Revolution over the counter. It has to be prescribed by a vet with an appointment. Weirdly, I saw it for sale online at Walmart and thought, great! What luck. I bought a 3-dose pack of the kitten/puppy variety.

After my order shipped it says it is actually a third-party seller from Singapore. Nothing against Singapore, but that seems really fishy to me since it’s not supposed to be for sale here and I’m worried it may be counterfeit or contain dangerous ingredients if it is from an unregulated seller.

Obviously I don’t want to take any chances on this product. Are there any other fur mite medications you can buy at the store (NOT Frontline)? I read about Advantage but some websites said it is for fleas and won’t treat mites.

        So confused!

Well, I’m pretty sure Olaf is just too cute to get fur mites .

Seriously, though. It’s not that big a deal. I know, bugs, ew, right? But he’ll be fine until a vet checks him. Might just be dry ears. My Olivia used to get really dry, flaky ears. I was sure it was mites but vet confirmed just dry skin. I used to take a soft baby brush and gently brush the flakes off and then massage a tiny dab of mineral oil into the dry spots.

That is weird about the Walmart order.

Yes! Thank you for understanding. I’ll try the soft brush idea and see if that helps. I hope it is just dry skin until we get in next week. You always make me feel better!

I don’t think it’ll be an issue for now. Kurotta had quite a bit of white flaky stuff on him not too long ago and I was also wondering if it could be mites, but it somehow just cleared up on its own. It could just be dry skin that came out due to the molt.

With mites, you tend to see some thickening of the skin, like white/yellow crusts. Also some hair loss. Dry skin on ears are common esp during a shed. Bam has had that, no mites according to his rabbit-savvy vet.

Advantage won’t kill mites, just fleas. Advantage II has some effect against mites because it contains permethrin as well as imidaclopride. Permethrin seems to be tolerated by most buns, but Medirabbit doesn’t deem it bunny safe.

Ivermectin kills mites, but it’s an injectable. There is an oral paste for horses but you’d need to dilute it a huge lot to be able to measure up an appropriate amount for the wee Olaf.

Thank you Kurotta! That is very reassurung. Glad to know it’s possible to just be dryness.

Thank you Bam! That is very helpful info. I tried resesrching alternatives and so many sites contradicted one another. It’s always so scary to try medications on our sweet buns. I’ll wait until the vet but keep those tips in my pocket. <3
