Hello all! My bunny Benjamin as some of you may know has a sphincter problem which causes him to uncontrollablely urinate. Which also burns off his fur on his underside. I am here to ask if there is any way to make it so he is not constantly wet.(his poo also gets stuck to his butt which causes me to have to constantly wash him) I’m also asking because about 2 weeks ago I found fly maggots on him from being wet. I washed him very very well and kept him inside for a while. Not sure if dippers would be the best option because I feel like it would just keep the moisture locked in. (I also have a special cream to keep his skin healthy Incase anyone was worried )

If he is constantly wet, I think it’s essential that you keep him inside, as as you’ve found out, it’s perfect conditions for flies to lay their eggs. Can you move him inside permanently?

I know he has a condition that causes him to be wet constantly, but he shouldn’t also get poop stuck to him. What is his diet like? Does he eat enough hay?

What kind of bedding does he have? Is it absorbant? Have you tried puppy pads? Since he’s wet constantly anyway, I don’t think there’s any harm in trying Wick’s previous suggestion of diapers.

Has he had a vet check up recently?

My mother’s has made it clear she does not want him inside no matter how much I tell her it would help him. He get veggies and a scoop of pellets and hay 24/7. And his bedding is a tarp with puppy pads and a blanket on top. Yes he eats enough hay. And last every time we go to the vet we get told the same thing, what he has is not curable. He is also given medication every day.

Does he use a litter box? Have you tried Carefresh or something similar?

I sadly don’t know of any ways to keep a bun 100% safe from fly strike if they live outside.

Diapers seems like the safest thing to me. You’d have to see how he reacts to wearing a diaper of course, some buns will just get rid of anything you put on them. Diapers would Wick away some of the moisture, and they would prevent flies from getting to his area. You’d have to change diapers often, of course.

If he is in an outdoors hutch, maybe you could put mosquito netting around it to stop I use IKEAs curtains LILL as mosquito netting around my buns outdoors run. There inexpensive and serve their purpose well.

I’m very sorry Benjamin has this condition.

(If you are interested in Bunjamin’s back story, it can be found in Sassy Bun’s history on their profile page).
