so I recently purchased some 3rd cut timothy hay from small pet select, and it smells really different than any of the other hay i’ve had, but i haven’t bought 3rd cut in a long time. but my real question is, it’s super brown. some tints of green in there but overall it’s light brown. the weird thing is that both of my boys eat it like crazy, more than they eat the 2nd cut greener hay we have from them – is this okay? i’m worried that the brown hay doesn’t have as many good things in it, but i’m not sure. and the fact that they’re eating a ton of it has me think it must be okay, but i’m just curious as to what you all think. thanks in advance!!

it depends. If the hay is not bad-smelling, wet, or moldy it is probably fine, especially if your rabbits do not show signs of poor health in the days after consumption. If you would like to be on the safe side, get different, normal hay, or (as I do) pick a variety of fresh grasses and weeds from you neighborhood daily instead of hay. Some say this is closer to a wild rabbit’s diet.

If your rabbit’s do show signs of poor health, please remove all brown hay from their cage immediately!

I have been getting many boxes of brownish and just plain out right brown crap from a different company… but when on their website they say the brown hay still has the same nutrients as the green, it’s just due to the sun drying process. I am not exactly how true this is coming from a company that has consistently gone down hill, in my opinion, due to the huge amounts of brown shriveled up hay pieces they feel fine about sending, but when it comes to my BunBun, she won’t eat those brown bits, so it has no nutrients at all for her since she won’t even foot flick them, much less eat them.

I just had a bag of OxBow that was like that – except my bunny’s wouldn’t touch it. I have been having to use it in their litter.

And the bag of hay cost me $26 plus tax – so that sucked.
