Hey guys, quick question. My bunnies absolutely LOVE kale. Like, maybe even more than bananas??

I’m reluctant to give them kale too regularly because I’ve read that it’s high in oxalates (although different websites are contradictory about this). Also, I’d like to give them a good variety of greens – but I can feel their disappointment whenever I fill their bowl with something that’s not kale, hahaha.

They seem to like lettuces, romaine, arugula, escarole, parsley, basil… they grudgingly eat spinach… and they really hate collard greens, turnip greens, and swiss chard.

Just curious what kinds of greens everyone else’s bunnies prefer, especially if they’re also kale fans!

My Bam used to live kale and black kale, but he had elevated calcium levels according to blood work, so his vet stopped his kale. This doesn’t necessarily mean that kale is bad for all bunnies, and it doesn’t even mean that kale caused his elevated blood calcium. But to be safe, no more kale for him. Luckily he loves fennel and fennel is low Ca. In the winter he eats the bulbs and now during summer he eats the dill-like fennel greens that I grow for him.

It never occurred to me to give them fennel! I’ll have to try that. Thanks bam!

Dill, oregano, thyme, rosemary, mint, cilantro, lovage, celery leaves, edible flowers, dandelion…

Our bun LOVES cilantro. If it were up to her, she’d just get a big bowl of cilantro every day. Our aim is to ensure she’s getting a good variety, so she tends to get a salad that’s a mix of a lot of things. Luna loves cilantro, mint, kale, arugula, green/red leaf lettuce, celery, carrots/carrot tops, basil, bell pepper, and parsley. We try to be good about rotating the high oxalic acid and high calcium leafies, but I also love letting her try new things. She hasn’t tried spinach, bok choy, mustard greens, or watercress yet, but I think she’ll really like watercress. I bet she’d like dill, too, and I’d love to feed her a nasturtium. She hates fennel. She isn’t very picky, so, so far fennel is the only thing she’ll just leave behind (she takes after her mom, I also hate fennel).

Luna’s Parents: I had to laugh, she hates fennel and so does her mother ? But it does remind me of what I once saw in a BBC documentary on wild rabbits, that rabbits learn what plants are good to eat from plant-derived molecules in their mother’s milk. That’s supposed to be part of the reason why wild rabbits don’t eat poisonous plants.

My Bam likes celery stick (chopped up in centimeter pieces) and now in the summer he gets fresh apple leaves, yarrow, plantain, sow thistle, raspberry leaves etc. And willow! Willow is a big favorite.
