        Hi everyone,
I have a very naughty and playful black lion head bunny named Echo. He is almost 5 years old and and still has as much energy and spunk as the day I got him. I’ve had him since he was old enough to be taken away from his mother and he is my baby even though he is not a snuggly, nice, free roaming bun. He is so naughty so he caged. Don’t worry, it is a very big cage and I let him out daily. Anyway. I’ve had this bun all through college and I am now married and I have a baby in the way. Echo had his own room in our spare room to hide from my husbands dog, but obviously that room is now going to be the babies room. I do not want the rabbit in the same room as the baby. I think pets are too dirty to be left in a nursery (just my personal opinion). My problem is I don’t know where to go with him now. Our house is very very small so he won’t fit in a hallway or in the kitchen or living room. It’s too small and I don’t want the dog to bother him. We have a basement the problem with that is there is very little light. We have a sunroom but the problem with that is it is not temperature controlled and he’s been inside his whole life. The last place he could go is mine and my husbands bedroom, the problem with that is my husband works third shift and sleeps during the day. I don’t want echo to wake him up playing/eating/chewing etc. and we also have daylight blocking curtains so he would be in the dark all night and all day until my husband wakes up. I refuse to get rid of him. He is my pet and I decided to get him 5 years ago and I will not give him up. He is my responsibility and I will give him the best home I can for the rest of his life so I need opinions and help on where to put him to ensure he will be happy and healthy. Any input is needed I have been so upset about where to go with him lately. And I only have 3 more months to find him a new spot in my house. Thanks in advance!

Could you give him free-run of your kitchen? It seems like kitchens are usually the easiest to bunny-proof. Could you put the dog in a crate or another room while Echo is getting play time?

You also might look into building him a NIC cube condo to give him more room with less floor space. You can get creative with the shape and number of levels, so you might be able to fit something in a space you hadn’t thought would work. You would still want to give him run-around time each day, but it might give you more options.

Also, it seems to me that the baby would be exposed to the rabbit fur etc no matter where Echo’s cage was, so it might not be the worst to just keep him in the spare room….

I also live in quite a small home, maybe maxing out around 700 -750 sq ft if lucky… my living room is a total 138 sq ft and I still managed to put BunBun’s 42” dog crate (smaller than recommended but most of the time she isonly put in it at night) and it blocks a closet and part of a window… it’s less than ideal, but it was the best place for it and it works…plus we are usually in that room most, so she still had family interaction before I Bunny proofed the room…

Building upward is also very useful when dealing with lack of space. Kitchen is also great because easier floor clean up with hay situation.

You could put him in the basement, I think rabbits are indifferent to how much light there is. And then you can bring him out for playtime, and put the dog in a room. You could try bonding your bun and the dog, then they’d get along and Echo could be free roam. It’s nice to see that you refuse to give him up and accept that he’s your responsibility echo is very lucky to have you

I worry about him all alone down there. That might be the best place for him though… he gets along with the dog when supervised but I do not trust the dog or the rabbit for him to ever be free roam he is too naughty and wild.

I agree that the basement would be a very lonely place… better to be somewhere where there is activity and interaction throughout the day.

I’m worried about putting him in the living room because the dog will just pester him and try to eat his hay and poo all day

I think I am just going to try him in the bedroom for awhile and see how he takes it. I can’t have him in the kitchen/living room because of the dog and free roaming is not an option for him he is very destructive. He’s already torn up pieces of carpet and drywall! Lol we don’t have central air and we have an ac unit in the bedroom. Although it is dark it gets more activity than the basement and it will be quiet and away from baby and the dog. Thoughts?

Is he neutered by any chance? Sometimes the destructive behaviours may decrease after a neuter (not all the time though, depending on individual bun).

I think the bedroom sounds alright as long as he has adequate space to exercise. Bunnies who stay cooped up all day (our definition of this may differ from theirs) and get bored are more likely to become destructive too.

He is fixed and gets let out once or twice a day for a decent amount of time (with supervision because of his destructive tendencies).
My husband just told me he will build something for him to fit in the living room, ( a cage that goes up rather than out) but that could take months with him ?
