I used to feed my rabbits hay from the pet store until I started a rabbit rescue and started purchasing bulk timothy hay from Tractor Supply. I always thought that since they were both timothy hay, it didn’t matter. We recently switched vets, and she told us that timothy hay meant for horses is VERY different than timothy meant for rabbits, and we should switch over to pet-quality hay.
I’ve never heard this, what are people’s opinions on this?

Your vet is mistaken. Horse quality hay is perfectly fine for rabbits. It’s hay that is fed to cattle that is not suitable for rabbits.

I too think your vet is mistaken. Horses and rabbits are very much alike when it comes to food and digestion. Both species need skinny food with lots of coarse fiber. I recently acquired some really, really high quality horse hay that I’m very happy with.

Cows are very different from horses and rabbits, in that they are ruminators. Cows as a rule get richer food, like silage. That’s not good for buns.
