Hi everyone! I’ve noticed that my bun has a bit of dry flakey skin on the back of his ears. It’s mainly located on his left ear though. I don’t know what the cause of this is. I’m thinking it’s due to the dry weather and him shedding his winter coat. Any ideas on what I can do to help his dry skin? He hasn’t been scratching his ears excessively and he has no scabs or red skin, so I don’t think it’s mites. Please let me know if rabbits can have dry skin and if so, what type of lotion or cream can I use to help? I’ll try to attach a photo as well. In the photo I parted the fur on his ears so hopefully you can see the flakes.

Welcome to BB! It’s great that you were attentive to see this change in skin. Any changes are worth an evaluation.

The image you posted was broken unfortunately. I tried to re attach it, but there was no picture attached to your post. To add a photo, you need to 1) attach it first then 2) press “insert image” once you see it pop up under the “Browse” button.

Some dry skin is sometimes seen on rabbit’s ears, especially when the bun is shedding. You can brush the flakes off with a very soft brush and you can use bag balm or sudocream or even plain Vaseline or food grade coconut oil on the dry spots -just a tiny bit, of course. Check ears daily for redness, irritation, or if the dry patches seem to get bigger in size.

file:///var/folders/h5/trrwzk_54msc2x6b7nclkk240000gn/T/image1%20(2)%204.jpeg For some reason it will not allow me to attach the image, it says file type not allowed and I’m not tech savvy so here is a link that you should be able to copy and paste to see the image.
