Our Male rabbit was just neutered yesterday and is thankfully doing all of the expected behavioral things (eating, drinking, pooping, etc). How do I easily and safely check his surgery area? I tried standing him on his back legs, which he somewhat tolerated, but then kept trying to kick and that scared me for his back and stitches. I didn’t get a good look. I have read people who say to “trance” to check, but then I have also read this is incredibly terrifying and can cause a heart attack. I have not tried this, but it obviously would be much easier to see it. Any tips?? I would like to get at least a couple of good looks as he recovers. Thanks!

          Tease him!

I used to hold a big lovely strawberry above my doe and she’d get up on her hind legs herself to reach it. Then, you can peek under and make sure all is going well down there! Some people recommend using a mirror to get a better look, so you don’t have to bend like a cryptid!

Hahaha! Thanks! He was not willing to reach for food yet, but I like the mirror idea. I also thought I may be able to get my husband to look while I hold, but he’s kicking so much when I lift his upper body. I may have to try the trance ? Is it less traumatizing if I do it for just a couple seconds?

You can still try without trancing him.

Try using a similar technique that you did with standing him up, except have yourself literally against him for support.

I check Wick’s area-down-there every day since his neuter actually, even though it’s long after because sometimes I’ll find a poop stuck in fur haha. I lean down next to Wick so I’m side to side, my head touching his. I use one hand and slide it under his front paws, then hinge my body up (with my body remaining in contact with his) to stand him up. Then I’ll use my other hand to lift up his feet just enough so I can position at angle to see the site. He is practically still standing vertical, but is only 1in off the ground and my upper body is still against him the entire time for support.

Thanks! That’s what I did tonight and my husband did the fur spreading and up close look. One did look more swollen than the other, but no blood or discoloration.

He still isn’t drinking, but is eating a little hay, all his normal veggies and a little extra and some pellets and just ate lettuce I first soaked in his water dish (so very wet). If he doesn’t drink by early tomorrow I’m going to try syringe feeding water.
