  We have had a small black and white rabbit visiting our yard day and night the past few days, eats out of our hands, does not mind being petted gently. We have a lot of hawks and owls and dogs in our neighborhood so we put him in a carrier to get a chance to email around the neighborhood and see if anyone was missing a pet one. We have a lot of wild brown rabbits in our neighborhood and he (or she) does not look like them at all either so that coupled with the fact it did not mind being put into a carrier probably means it was an escaped pet rabbit.
  
  We have started by asking around if anyone has lost a rabbit.
  
  Assuming he is not claimed, obviously we would take him to a vet asap. Any other suggestions on what to do with him to make sure he or she is ok?

  Glad you were able to take him in away from danger. It’s good he is responding well to you. : )
  
  Do check him over for bite wounds and parasites. Bites can quickly become infected and abscess. Then dealing with abscess in rabbits is troublesome. Is it hot where you live? Rabbits do better in the cooler weather.
  
  Keeping his diet basic would be best. Are you able to get hold of some hay? Depending where you live, timothy or orchardgrass hay is popular with rabbits. Any horse quality [u/]grass hay is suitable.
