I will be buying a house for the first time soon and I figured I would get the forums opinion. All else being equal, should I go for a house with wood floors and carpet on top for the bunnies to run around on. Or should I search for a house that already has carpet?

Is there anything else I should consider to make things easier for my bunnies?

My house is tiled, but personally I prefer wood floors over carpets. Both wood and carpet flooring are prone to staining, but since carpet seems to be more absorbent (being fabric), I always feel that you can never really clean it very thoroughly. Carpet will absorb moisture upon immediate contact, but if the wood flooring is laminated, the liquid will most likely stay on top and you can just wipe it up before it causes long term damage to the floor.

Of course with laminated wood flooring, you’d have to do some extra work and get some rugs for traction, but at least those can be washed easily if pee does get into them.

I’ve just got a new flat, and I did consider the bunnies… But I actually tried to avoid carpet. I think wooden/tiled floors are better for easier cleaning, then you can cover it with lots of rugs for bunny feet. It’s also better in hot weather, so they can find a cool patch if needed.

What about an unfinished basement, will it be safe to take them down there or will that be to hard / abrasive for their feet?

I think some natural light is quite important for buns. Does it get any light? I don’t think flooring is an issue, as you can always put rugs down. Is it concrete?

Yes it’s a concrete basement and no it doesn’t get that much natural light. I won’t be leaving them down there but I might give them access to the basement if they want to explore down there.

Slightly off topic, but we’ll be moving in less than a month and literally all my furniture purchases are based on Wick, including a bed that he can’t get under and a coffee table and TV stand he can’t poke around in, haha.

If you can find a mix, that’d be good. As mentioned, rabbits like the laminate/tile/cool floors as an option. I don’t think all carpet is very bad, it may just be a bigger hassle to clean and you want to be aware of temperature and dust.

If you choose a wooden floor there are varnishes/lacquers that make wood floors resistant to staining, they’re often used in kitchens. My mum has that type of varnish on her kitchen floor and it’s amazing. Normal varnish on hard wood floors not so much though. Everything stains, and stains won’t come out ☹️

Concrete should be covered with sth because concrete absorbs pee to an extent.

I think if they’re not staying in the basement it should be fine, but like bam said, concrete is porous to a certain extent so the pee would get into it.

Also, basements are usually somewhat damp due to the lack of sunlight and ventilation so I generally don’t think the buns would benefit much from being there.

Does anyone here know if Scott’s Lawn products can harm bunnies after it’s been applied to a lawn? If it does hurt the bunnies, how long should I wait before I let the bunnies play in the lawn?
