So, I always thought it was just a bit of light, but it turns out Poppy has a smidgen of blue in her eye! The other is completely black, but her left eye is just a little bit special.

Does anyone else have a bun with something similar, or complete heterochromia? I was worried about her eye when I first saw it, but it doesn’t seem to be causing her any problems.

My Bleu does! He’s a dutch with one blue eye, one brown eye. From what we were told, there’s no health issues with it, it’s just pretty (and when he sleeps, it’s very clear, hence drawing comments it’s his demon eye).

I used to have a bunny with one brown eye and one blue eye, and I’ve also seen a number of bunnies like this

I’ve never seen a bun with just a smidgen of blue like yours though, it’s usually the full one eye. Nonetheless Poppy’s so adorable and her fur looks sooo soft!

@Sleepy – What a fitting name for him! It really is pretty, and oh my gosh, the demon eye comment. It really goes clear at that point? That’s so cool.

@kurotta – that seems to be a recurring pattern, huh! I heard it was something to do with the Vienna gene, but you’re right in that I found nothing when I searched for ‘tiny colour in rabbit eye’ or something. Poppy thanks you! She has so much of it, brushing will be much needed soon! Also, your icon is so cute. Kurotta’s very express-….ful?!

Yes it has to do with the Vienna gene, which I’ve read is neither recessive nor dominant. The ruby/red eye gene however is dominant, which is most likely why I’ve never seen rabbits with one red eye + one other coloured eye. It seems to only happen with blue eyes.

Haha Kurotta thanks you too That’s his “Hooman you haz pellets?!” face.

Pretty bun with a very cool looking eye!

This gets quite technical but you’ll find a lot on the subject here. http://www.medirabbit.com/EN/Eye_diseases/Congenital/Bicolor_en.pdf
The eye part starts on page 4.
                  There’s even a picture of a lop a bit like Poppy. : )

Wow! Heterochromia of the iris explains so much, especially the part about it being prominent in lop rabbits with white fur. Poppy isn’t pure white, but she’s definitely mostly white.

Thanks so much, jerseygirl! That was such an interesting read, even the parts about their coats!

@kurottabun Haha, nethies and their pellet love! I had a small nethie that looked exactly like Kurotta, and he’d make the same expression!

My Bindi had strangely beautiful eyes. He was a REW but not really….his eyes were pink but in the light they had a bluish tinge to them. Never saw another bun with eyes like that.

                      Poppy has beautiful eyes!
