Hi all! Just wondering what you guys do during this time of the year? It’s July 3rd but some people are lighting off fireworks now. Will be even worse tomorrow. My bun is super spooked and runs away when I get close to him. If I try to pet him he runs away, which is not like him. He seems to also be breathing kind of fast. I’m just concerned this might spark a bout of G.I. Stasis, would appreciate any stories on your past experience with rabbits and 4th of July fireworks. Thanks! Xo, Q

Don’t have 4th of July here, but I do have Halloween I’d set up her pen in the room where you can hear it the least, put lots of hidey houses everywhere. Maybe you could stay in the room with her, offering comfort (or food lol) so he can know you’re not the one making loud noises and scaring him.

You could try playing some music around him so he gets used to hearing sounds. If possible, turn the volume up gradually (not too deafening though – if you’re finding it deafening then it’d be worse for a bunny). Many bunnies don’t just get spooked because of how loud fireworks are, but also because the sound often comes in sudden waves in between some quietness.

Like Boo said, give him more hidey boxes too and maybe put a small piece of treat in there as a distraction. When my bunny is spooked he runs if I try to pet him in an open area. Once the bun finds a box and hides there, he’s less likely to run out again and you can then try to pet him and let him know that you’re not the threat.

Thank you everyone! I really appreciate the feedback, I’m going to get him some hidey houses (cardboard boxes) today. Hopefully he can get through tonight! Lol darn fireworks.
