Hi, I’m new here. My rabbit, Bolt has been thumping his back foot for no apparent reason whenever he comes and plays in our living room. I’ve googled “rabbit thumping” several times and each time it says that that they feel threatened when they do this, but I can’t really figure out where the threat could be. My first thought would be that the tv could be too loud and that stresses him out, but I’m really not sure. Other info about Bolt is that he is 8 years old, I’ve had him since he was 2 months old, and he is neutered, so I don’t know if that contributes to anything. Thanks for your time!

          Hi,
Do you have hiddey houses for him in there? I would honestly turn off everything besides the light in there and close all the curtains and see if he thumps. Then, if he doesn’t, add a window with no curtains and see if he thumps and if not, then keep adding regular noises or visible items you use in there everyday until he thumps, but slowly, so you can see what is setting him off. Make sure you don’t have anything burning like a candle as my buns freak out when I do.
He might be developing cataracts and sudden movements might be in his non-vision but then it comes in where he can see and he freaks.

Ahhh, I’m an idiot I think I private-messaged my response to you! But no, I don’t have any that are in my living room. But, okay, thank you, I’ll try that out and see if he calms down. Hopefully he’s not developing cataracts!! But, again, thanks, and you can ignore that PM that I accidentally sent.

If he’s been with you for 8 years, he’s probably used to you and the surroundings. So if he’s only started thumping recently, he could be getting scared by something new that you’ve added to the room. Another theory is that maybe another animal had been in the room recently, and he can still smell the scent?

No problem, I hope you get him to calm down!

Yeah, my cats tend to hang around whenever he is out in the living room playing. But he doesn’t seem to be threatened by them. In fact, he tends to be dominant with them, doing things like lunging at them and such. But he’s out playing right now, dashing around and binkying, not really thumping, so maybe he’s getting used to his surroundings!! Let’s hope so!!
