My four year old bunny is really skinny and missing some fur on the right side of his face. He’s eating well and acting normal but he isn’t gaining any weight. He lives with a two year old bunny and his weight is fine, do you think it’s tapeworm? Or some other type of parasite? They live inside and rarely go outside.

If it’s tapeworm, you would be able to see the worms in his poops. They look like smallish grains of rice…. It’s contracted from fleas, so they could get it even if they don’t go outside. That said, tapeworm usually doesn’t cause dramatic weight loss or fur loss, to my knowledge.

Either way, you should take him to the vet so he can assess (he can also help you determine his ideal weight). They will probably to check his poop, and maybe his blood also. Since he’s bonded, take both bunnies with you.

When you say hair loss on one side of the face, we typically think of hair loss that is associated with an eye discharge. Does your bunny have a runny eye? I don’t know what to make of the weight loss without further information. No other symptoms at all?

I agree with Dana, a vet will be able to assess the situation and help you determine the best course for treatment.

Thank you! I’ll bring them to the vet sometime this week. I don’t see anything in his poops so it’s probably not tapeworm.

Thanks for replying! He has a little bit of goop on his eyes, but the hair loss is more of on his chin then by his eye and it goes down his neck a tiny bit. No, there’s not any other symptoms (that I can see), he’s really energetic like usual and he’s eating normally, so I’m really confused. We’re going to the vet sometime this week to get him checked out.

I just took a closer look at his neck and it’s crusty yellow and he has red scabbing by his mouth (just a small thing), and under the yellow is black skin (I’m not sure if that’s just his skin color or something else). And his eyes are a little bit watery. And his back has some black specs in his fur that I think might be fleas or just something from his hay. I tried to put a picture but I don’t know how.

Based on the information given, I highly recommend going to a vet because your rabbit’s immune system will not be able to fight off fur loss that’s accompanied by yellow crustiness, dryness (which can lead to breaking skin by the mouh) and potentially an actual bug infestation. My Wick is very susceptible to ringworm, and the fur loss and condition will only get worse for skin-related conditions if left untreated.

It could be that an underlying condition which is causing the weight loss lowered your rabbit’s immune system, making him susceptible to a skin infection. This can be a possibility for weight loss. You mention he hasn’t gained weight, but if he’s fully growned, maintaining the same weight is healthy, as long as it’s a healthy weight. If he’s underweight, then that’s more of a consideration.

I’m glad you’re seeing a vet asap. Sending you good vibes!

Yes please take him to the vet. Could be a number of things, make sure your vet takes a good look at his teeth.
