My bunny has GI Stasis. I took her to the vet earlier for treatment and they gave her fluids, pain medication injection and motility drugs. It’s been about 10 hours and I’m still not seeing any improvement in her. She seems so lethargic and has been laying down all day. Usually, if I try to pick her up she freaks out, but now she’ll let me pick her up without a fuss. And when I give her medicine/critical care she has no reaction to the point where the critical care will drool out of her mouth. I’m wondering if this is a common problem with stasis or if my bunny is losing her will to live? I’m very worried any advice would be great

I’m sorry your bunny is going through this – it’s scary to have a poorly bunny

Do you administer the meds and critical care with a syringe? A lot of buns who go through stasis lose their appetite to eat due to the discomfort. You could try giving her some belly massages too.

Yes, I’ve been syringe feeding her and giving her belly rubs. It is very sad I wish she could go back to her usual sassy self

Have you tried giving her a piece of fruit or her favourite treat?

This is really sad, you are clearly doing all you can. May I ask how old is she?

My bunny had a GI scare recently so I know what you are going thru.

Can only offer positive vibes for her- knowing after the vet visit you are doing all you can. Stay positive and give her love. Let’s hope she isn’t giving up and pulls thru this.

                (((Both of you))) xx

Hi there, two of my buns are in stasis, one was very bad. I would say, if you have the funds to leave her at the vet for a day or two so they can force feed her and get the food into her system so her GI can start moving so then you can do supportive care at home. They should have gave you a bag of fluids to administer because when they are in stasis, they become very dehydrated and that can stop the gi tract too.

That’s a horrible situation to be in. Rabbits always hide their illness until everything is critical, so please don’t blame yourself for her condition. You’re doing everything you can. Rabbits can deteriorate really quickly, but can also bounce back quickly. It sounds like she’s hanging in the balance. Wishing you all the best and I hope she pulls through! You sound so amazingly caring and dedicated, I’m sure you’re doing everything you can for her.

I’m sorry to say she died an hour after I made this post. I’m devasted. Heartbroken. I have no idea how I’ll cope with her loss.

Thank you all for your kind words :'(

I’m so sorry for your loss Sadly rabbits have a very frail GI system, and they’ll also hide any sign of illness until things are becoming critical. GI stasis is every bunny owner’s nightmare and one of the major causes of death.
It is heartbreaking that you know you’ve done everything that you could for her, but that despite all the best care she was too ill to make a recovery.

We have a special section on the forum for our Rainbow Bridge bunnies. If you want you can make a memorial for her there. Once they’re ready for it many people post their favourite pictures there, and tell all about how special their relationship with their bun was. It can help with the overwhelming grief which you face now.

Wishing you all the best in these difficult times! Binky free little one…
