OK, that helps. This particular mite (sometimes just referred to as rabbit fur mite) is listed as potentially zoonotic. However, they do not actually take up residence on humans. If there is a heavy infestation, the mites could end up biting humans. People may react to the bites (just like humans may react to flea bites), but the mites cannot survive on humans. They do not burrow into the skin and they need to have fur to live in.
Ivermectin is traditionally used to treat fur mites and it can take as many as 3 doses. Revolution is also being used to treat them now. Again, it can take as many as 3 doses. That’s if the infestation is really bad.
According to MediRabbit, you can treat their area with boric acid flea products. These are generally safe, but the bunnies should not be in the room during treatment. Perhaps you can put them out on the porch while you’re cleaning their room and then put them in there when you are done. This may need to be repeated.
I don’t think the mites can get very far without a host. Someone can correct me if I’m wrong, but they generally don’t spread simply because they want to stay where the “food” is.
