Hi all! My bunny, Bonnie, has a 4X4 X-pen attached to a 3.5X2 cage. I have her cage hooked up to the X-pen door and the door opens inward into the pen (I’ll try to upload a photo if I can). She has been jumping and hanging off the side when I feed her, just barely getting her little paws over the top. That itself has worried me that she’d get hurt getting down. Tonight, I heard her racing around and metal clanging only to go upstairs and be met with a bunny outside her enclosure! My assumption is that since her cage isn’t as tall as the X-pen, she managed to jump on top and get out. She is free range when I’m in my dorm at school, but my room at home for the summer and winter breaks is not yet safe for her, nor are my parents fond of the idea of a rabbit running around. I would love to give her more space, but for now I’d like to focus on keeping her safely in her pen. Anyone have any ideas?

Below is a photo of the setup as well as the problem area. Her pen and cage door are shut for now until I find a way to block the top opening off. She tends not to spend a lot of time in the cage anyway, only when it’s hot and I have a fan pointed at a damp towel over it. While I know this is not ideal for her size-wise, she lived in that cage for six months, so this feels like a mansion to her. I intend on giving her much more space as soon as I can.

You could get a big piece of fabric sheet and just cover the top by clipping the fabric onto the pen wires

Yepp, seconding Kurotta. A roof really puts bunnies off jumping, even if it’s something flimsy
