Hi Everyone! I recently rescued a rabbit named Nova. We believe she is around a year old (or a few months older). She didn’t come from a great place and is finally warming up to me and recently started giving kisses, yay! I wanted to start introducing some veggies into her diet so I gave her about a one inch square of romaine lettuce an hour ago. I came back to check on her and she left some uneaten caecotrophs and had some small poops as well. This isn’t normal for her, usually she produces large healthy poops! I know introducing new foods can cause problems but I’d like to somehow get veggies into her diet. Any suggestions? And how long should I wait for her poops to go back to normal before it becomes a problem and I should bring her to the vet? Thank you!

It sounds like the vege was indeed the culprit. Since she didn’t come from a great place, her guts may not have developed in the best way for a bunny and hence it’s more fragile now. How long have you had her?

Some bunnies tolerate certain types of veggies better than others even if they are all supposedly okay to give. You could try giving her other types of veggies and see if she reacts this way to every single type. But do this only when her poops are back to normal.

The poops should go back to normal soon as long as she’s eating lots of hay and drinking lots of water

I don’t think the romaine would have got through her system that quickly so I would assume it’s something else.

Please keep an eye on her. These symptoms set alarm bells off for me because when my Buttercup got poorly for the first time, she produced tiny poops and left a bunch of cecals and then ceased popping altogether.

Thanks for the response! I’ve had her for about three weeks now. She was underweight when I got her so I’ve been trying to get it up with just her diet of hay and pellets. I will give it a try with some different veggies and see how it goes

Hi! I made sure to keep a close eye on her and within two hours her poops went back to being normal. I’m lucky because she’s really good at eating hay and drinking lots of water so her system is back to normal now! Thank you for the help
