So I’ve been thinking of switching my bunny to free roam. I just started today (i bunny proofed the House, of course) but I’m worried he will chew through the big faux leather couch set in my living room. He doesn’t seem to like any of his chew toys and rarely even looks at them but boy does he love rubber!! He chewed off almost half of the rubber off a dumbbell, and rubber on various parts of random rubber pieces on my door. I’m pretty confused about weather he would chew through that couch . I really don’t want him to get G.I. stasis or anything like that.

Honestly it’s been my experience that Icey would “sample” everything. Why she would prefer what she preferred I don’t know.  Bunnies are all different, as you probably know. But everything got sampled. So cord protectors, blankets over couches, denim stapled to underside of box spring, and grids to protect the untouchables. There had to be a layer of sample-ability over, around, or in front of the thing to be protected because everything was to be investigated with her mouth. Tongue, teeth, or both. They are curious by nature I suppose. Everything was fair game. She even sampled the brand new refrigerator on the left lower corner much to the chagrin of Janice. She essentially scratched her initials in it with her teeth.

So she may leave it alone, she may just put a little test nick in the fabric, or she may find it something that she likes to destroy like a cardboard box. That was our experience. A game of tit for tat. “Oh you like this?  Well then let’s do this.  Oh you are intent on destroying that?  Then let’s try that.”  What are you interested in and not interested in so we can protect what we want to or can. And sometimes…the thing she wasn’t interested in for years…well, one day she became interested. There are consequences to having a free roaming bunny.  No doubt about it. But we wouldn’t have had it any other way.

They may chew real leather. I know because they chewed my friend’s bag. 8C I’m assuming my buns would chew fake leather as well. It highly depends on your bun though! Also, be sure to worry about the underside of the couch. Monster will crawl under my couch and eat the cushions. You really don’t want them to make a burrow inside your couch, haha!

Exactly Daisy! That is why we had to staple thick denim to the underside of our box spring mattress. She discovered she could tear through that thin layer underneath and then she could get up in there and have a really cool hideout. And bunnies seem to have a mind like a steel trap. Once they know there is something interesting or fun, they never forget!

I dunno about Faux leather, but they chewed the hell out of my real leather couch. And recliner. And loveseat, but not so much that one. What I DID notice is that they targeted anyplace where people spent a lot of time flesh to leather, so I’m wondering if they weren’t chewing the leather so much as being after the accumulated sweat salts in the leather?

I think it’s generally safe to say that bunnies will chew anything lol!

It’s hard to bunny proof every single item in the house, so sometimes you can only do something about it once it happens. You’d probably notice the destruction site before the bunny has chewed it long enough for it to be harmful.
