So our Marshmallow seemed to not be feeling well, kinda taking it easy and eating/pooping a little lighter so we brought him in for a little checkup where the doc said hes got a little gas and prescribed us metoclopram in which he got his first dose at the vet. Upon getting home marshmallow started pooping a bunch which is great and he became lively, we just want to know what else we can do for him! We love our baby

Is this vet rabbit savvy? As in you’ve asked many rabbit related questions to see if he has the knowledge a rabbit vet should know? Meclizine is also prescribed for motion sickness( mostly in cats and dogs though). Most rabbit vets would say to use simethicone, also called infant gas drops for rabbits with gas.

We saw a different doctor at our vet as our current one was in the hospital for surgery himself, the medicine works as marshmallow poops ALOT after we give the medicine and started doing well after. We just want him to get rid of the gas because we can’t give him the pills everyday after the few days prescribed is over. What caused his gas?! We are worried parents

I agree, it sounds like a weird medicine to give for gas. Normally, you can treat your bunny for gas at home with baby gas drops, known as simethicone. The usual dosage is 1ml of 40mg simethicone. If after an hour it hasn’t made a difference, you can give them another 0.5ml dose, and again an hour later. If that still hasn’t made a difference, then it’s time for the vet. Simethicone doesn’t react with anything, so its totally safe to give at home.

If you took a bunny in with the symptoms your bunny had, normally a vet would listen for gut sounds, and if they’re quiet, potentially give painkillers (loxicom or metacam) and zantac to encourage digestion. They might also give subcutaneous fluids, and encourage force feeding with critical care if the bun isn’t eating by itself.

I do recommend looking up a rabbit savvy vet for the future. Depending which country you’re in, we can probably help you with lists.

As for what causes gas, sometimes it’s hard to identify a cause, and other times it’s quite easy. Did you give Marshmallow any different vegetables to usual? Some veg that is known for causing gas in some bunnies is cabbage and broccoli.

We gave him nothing out of the ordinary, no.

The vet mentioned gas, and he gave us this meclizine and immediately after marshmallow was pooping like a machine and started to perk up, same thing this morning. He didn’t poop all night and then once I gave him the pill he pooped a bunch. Should I call the vet and make sure he gave us the right medication? I just want marshmallow to do good. I’m nervous. He is eating some food and making his poops after the pill

If he’s fine now, I wouldn’t bother calling or going back to the vet, it might just stress Marshmallow out. If he’s eating and pooping, that’s the important thing. I was just giving you the info for future information

thank you, we are just over protective parent’s and we care more about our pets than other humans haha! I will update this thread how he is doing.

Just got home: healthy amount of poop for mid afternoon, I am pleased. Its his nap time now though so we will play later on

Hi, I really appreciate all the help you have provided me with thus far. Marshmallow seems to be doing okay as he was up playing with some cardboard boxes earlier and is out of his cage grooming/laying around which is good. Earlier today he was looking like he was laying weird when we were in the kitchen for some bigger area free run. He is eating some more hay and starting today we reduced some of the pellets to promote for more hay intake (we were feeding 1/4th cup TWICE daily). We are going to move to 1/4th a cup daily, splitting it in two for 1/8th twice daily now and we got lots of hay available for him which he was definitely picking on all day sporadically. As for sounds in his gut they’re pretty quiet you really have to put your ear up to him to hear them. He is still taking 1/2 of a 7.5mg Meclizine twice daily. He’s up and alert later in the night with us which is good I just wanna see more poops and him not sitting uncomfortable throughout the day. Is there anything else we can do to help him feel better? Sorry if I’m asking to much, we just love marshmallow and are scared and nervous.

Anyone else weigh in on the prescribed med? I think it’s a weird prescription as its generally for head tilt. should I do simethicone as well? I’m super over the top in protecting my little bun. As we speak he is getting a little munch on some hay

Simethicone won’t do any harm, as it doesn’t interact with other medicines, and will only break up gas bubbles if they’re there. You might be interested in this article on stasis – it’s about GI Stasis, which obviously Marshmallow doesn’t have, since you got him to the vet before he stopped eating, but you might find it useful anyway. It also mentions simethicone as safe (and is written by a vet). Don’t be worried about the ‘silent killer’ part, because as I said, Marshmallow doesn’t have stasis!

UPDATE: the medicine bottle was mislabled and was actually metoclopram which makes sense for GI mobility

He seems to be doing better lots of poops, becoming more lively. and getting his poop count up and eating more hay. We are weening him off oxbow essentials onto oxbow garden select as I feel its a better food as it doesnt have the cane molasses in it and is a hay based food. Sirius&Luna you’ve been a great help and I am so grateful for you to be checking on this post as you can you the best.

Ah, that makes much more sense!

I’m so glad to hear he’s doing better You can also reduce his pellet consumption in general (slowly!). My bunnies only get about a tablespoon each a day

Hi thank you! So my girlfriend just asked me should we start tapering him off the medicine? I let her know that I looked at it and we should ween him off it maybe giving it to him once a day.

So my question is: Do you think it is appropriate that we begin to start to drop the medicine once a day starting tomorrow? Given the fact he is doing better eating and drinking, and poops are doing better? Some insight from all of you are welcome!

He is currently taking 7.5 metoclopram twice daily, seeming to be doing better.
