My partner and I rent studio flat, we’re students and can’t afford any bigger at the moment. There are moths in our wardrobes and we bought cedar balls and hanger rings to try to get rid of them, after googling them minutes after putting them in there and finding they are unsafe for bunnies.

Is there a way I can save our clothes without hurting the rabbits as everything has to be done in close proximity to them? I can’t afford to replace my clothes and many have sentimental value.

If I just take out and wash everything and spray the wardrobes down with lavender oil will that sort it? Is there anything else I can do?

I don’t know what to do and of course the rabbits are our main priority.

Moths love biological residue like hair, sweat, and oils. Wash or dry clean your clothes. This will also get rid of any moth larvae or eggs left in the clothing. Then you can use those vacuum scalable bags (I think you can buy some that hang in your closet) or get and airtight container and fold all your clothes in there. This way neither moths nor bunnies can get in! Bunny safe method.

Unless your bunny is housed in your closet, the cedar balls, etc. are not going to hurt anything. The danger of cedar is being chronically exposed to and breathing in the phenols (e.g. using cedar shavings as rabbit bedding).

Id still take out everything and wash it and clean the closet meticulously. Motgs can do real damage and I don’t think cedar balls kill them, I think they just deter them. As long as you’re having this problem I’d keep wool clothes and rugs etc in sealed plastic bags after cleaning.

As LBJ says cedar balls will be fine unless the buns are housed inside the closet.

There are pheromone traps for moths but I don’t know how effective they are.
