How does your bunny act if he is out and you just sit there and don’t try and interact? Like read a book or something. Is he aggresisve when you ignore him or only when you try and interact with him or pet him?

Do you know how old he is? He could’ve still been a baby back then when he was with your (then) boyfriend, but when he came to you he turned older so his teenage hormones are kicking in. A lot of bunnies become aggressive once their hormones hit and this can only improve after neutering.

Alternatively it could also be like Daisy implied – you could’ve done something that he didn’t like and so now he associates you with something negative. Have you picked him up before and do you do it often?

Unfortunately unneutered rabbits naturally do things like spray. I doubt that he’s trying to communicate something to you with spraying. It’s just something hormonal rabbits do.

If you pick him up and he bites and scratches until you let him down safely, I assume that means he’s probably jumping out of your arms. That’s a very negative association for a bunny, so it’s probably why he avoids you.

For me something I’ve found effective (it just took a long time) was completely ignoring my bunny and not trying to interact with her in “her space’ or messing with her space when she was in it. She has a couple places that she consider hers (her enclosure, a little den under a stool, her litter box and food dishes). If she’s close I don’t touch them and I don’t try and reach into her spaces when she’s chilling. I just sit on the floor regularly and do my own thing, like read or do work on the laptop and if she comes to investigate I let her and don’t try and touch. When I need to clean any of her spaces I do it when she’s somewhere else. It’s been five months and only this week has she started letting us pet her when we feed her treats in her litter box. I’m learning with rabbits you’ve got to take it SLOW and let them lead the way. I haven’t had the exact same experience as you, my bun has never acted aggressive, but she was very standoffish for a long time and I just had to follow her lead.
