My vet recently informed me my rabbit is overweight and at the same time, I found a growth on her left front paw that is worrying me. The vet couldn’t ID it and recommends removal (for $700!) and I’m very nervous about putting her under anesthetic, especially if she’s overweight.

She doesn’t seem to be bothered by it: there’s no change in gait, no avoiding standing on it, etc.

I’m wondering if it’s caused by/worsened by her being overweight but ultimately I just want to know: has anyone seen anything similar on their bunnies or other ones, and if so, what was it in your case?

Obviously I’ll do what needs to be done for her, but I’d like to make the decision fully informed.

          Hi ellajanelapin

Is this her front paw and on the underside?

Weight can certainly have a negative impact on rabbits feet. It can lead to or exacerbate sore hocks (Pododermatitis) They don’t have the added protection of paw pads. It is hard to say from the photo if this is a case of sore hocks or not..
Is the vet wanting to open or remove it to try discern what it is?

I’d cetainly seek a second opinion and perhaps some more quotes. $700 does seem exhorbitant to me but I understand in some regions, this is the going rate for vet care sadly.

Thanks for answering! It is the front paw, underside, yes… the vet recommends complete removal under anesthetic and then sending it to a lab to identify. It’s not on a place that gets a tonne of weight and isn’t moist/wet at all, just a sort of dry lump that’s fairly hard.

ellajanelapin it almost looks like an excess of callus to me. A buildup of the regular calluses that bunnies get on their feet. Is it close to her dewclaw? The nail that is on the inside and higher up on the paw. Maybe the nail is growing irregularly and causing some swelling. Since you said it was hard that’s why I thought callus.

I agree about getting a second opinion before making any decisions. You should also keep an eye on the growth to see if it gets bigger or not. Good luck!

Thanks for your advice! It is right below the dewclaw, yes! the human equivalent would be where the thumb turns into the wrist, just about. I took the picture yesterday and will take a picture every couple days and keep an eye on it for now.
