        Hi,

My rabbit hasn’t been in the best of health since we brought her this time last year. She had to have her toe amputated as she gained a wound after being with us for just 2 weeks !! We recently got her neutered due to behavioural problems and thought that it would calm her hormones down, which has kind of worked, but she almost didn’t make it through the operation. She is living in a cage with another rabbit but they are in separate parts of the cage.

Today we went in her outdoor bunnery and saw blood on the floor and multiple blood splatters over the walls. She is a white rabbit and upon inspection I cannot find the cause of any sort of bleeding. She is eating like she normally would (which is a lot!!) and is producing her normal sized stools (which are big). We would like to avoid taking her to the vets because we are afraid that it might cause her too much stress to survive as she has had very traumatic experiences in the past. It is very hard to get a close inspection of her as she is very jumpy and doesn’t like being held by anyone.

Does anybody have any suggestions as to what may have caused this or if it is a cause to be concerned? We have been very worried about her as she seems to be losing weight again despite no change in her eating habits.

        Any help would be great.

        Thank you !!

I am guessing (not a bunny expert), but maybe it’s something to do with her teeth or mouth? Weight loss might be a result of that if it’s uncomfortable for her to chew. It might be good to call your vet and see what they suggest. Maybe they could give you an idea of how to hold her for inspection or go over a some things with you on the phone after you explain the situation. I’m sorry to hear your bunny is suffering and I hope she’s able to feel better soon!

My thought is a nail that broke, which is now healed so you cannot readily find it, or bloody urine, so it would not leave marks on your rabbit since it exited smoothly.

Is it possible to send photos to your vet for consultation?

I am also curious on what has been attributed as the cause or reasons your rabbit has been considered a bit more frail. I do not know your vet, but sometimes people take their rabbits to inexperienced rabbit vets, and it can be the vet’s inexperience which cause some of the during and post-treatment complications.

Can you share how old your rabbit is and how long ago she was spayed?

Also, since you mention another rabbit, are the rabbits barred from interacting from each other? Are they bonded? The blood may be from a fight, if she has no markings and they got into a fight through cage bars. Some background on their history would be helpful.

Blood splatter always makes me think a nail broke too. It can look like a murder scene!
