Taro buns (https://imgur.com/MpXJCXz) got a terrifying ear infection in January. He couldn’t move around properly, his eyes were doing that weird back-forth thing, it was just terrible.

We cultured his ear and got him on the right antibiotics, he seemed to get better! Well, at least he can move, eat, use his litterbox, and generally be cuddly.  He still has head tilt and can get disoriented, but he seems to be happy.

I’m worried though, because 6 months later, he still has a lot of pus in his ear. The vet seems to think that this is OK — at least the vet hasn’t expressed any urgency in changing the treatment. I’m starting to get concerned, though. Won’t the bacteria get immune to the antibiotics? I’ve never heard of a human being put on antibiotics for 6 months +. Isn’t there something else we can do to make sure that the infection completely goes away? I’m still living like he only has maybe 6 months – 1 year to live (when we first found it we were ready for him to die, it was that bad).

Does anyone know where things go from here? Any advice is greatly appreciated!

Are there any other bunny savvy vets in your area? Some bunnies have been on long courses of antibiotics for other reasons, but at this point if the treatment isn’t working, something more aggressive may need to be done. Antibiotic injections or even changing up the antibiotics and giving a higher dose. But if he’s been on the same one for 6 months with not a ton of improvement, it’s time for a change.

I agree with A&B – it may be worth getting a second opinion from another bunny savvy vet. Sometimes another vet may be able to spot something this one couldn’t.

              Hi!
My bunny was on pen-g for a whole year with no issues for her jaw abscess, she was on daily probiotics and prebiotics. But an ear infection needs to be delt with by a rabbit savvy vet because it can lead to head tilts and abscesses in the ear canal if the bacteria are not killed. But don’t go straight to the strongest antibiotics because we did and one of my buns had all his good bacteria killed and went into stasis. Start off in the medium range and then go up from there if no resolution.
