I am going on my holidays in about a month and a half. I will be gone for a whole month. So, like the overly anxious person that I am, I am getting Boo prepared. I have already sorted out her cooling situation since she is outside, I have put frozen water bottles and tiles everywhere. She has three water bowls in different places and has plenty of access to air. But, I am concerned about her being on her own for a month. My whole family  is going, so there’s nobody in the house. Pet boarding over here is reallyyy expensive. And giving her to a friend to mind is just not really possible and I think it would really stress her out. My best option is to get my neighbour to come round twice a day to feed her and give her fresh water, which is what I’ve done before when I’ve gone away for a weekend or something similar. However, this is not just a weekend and Boo is on her own now (rip sweet bobby). I don’t know how she’s going to handle a whole month on her own or is this too much time being lonely? Does anyone have any experience and can give me a few tips and pointers on what I could do?

          hi there!

I personally think this isn’t a good idea. She needs to have a person who is very educated on bunnies since you know, bunnies can take a turn for the worse within hours and an untrained person could miss this. And being outside for a whole month is dangerous too with the heat, she could have a heat stroke. I would say, I know boarding at a vet is expensive but they will take the best care of her, give her plenty of love and exercise time and if she falls ill, they can treat her right away. I know it is expensive but see if they can do some payment plan or offer you a discount, it can give you the peace of mind that she is getting the best care she can get. Bunnies need constant looking after to notice sudden illnesses and if your neighbor comes by later in the day, it could be bad for Boo.

Maybe you can find someone to stay at your house during the time your away to keep a better eye on her, as long as they are rabbit savvy.

            Hi, thanks for the advice.

Unfortunately, I am completely financially dependent on my parents, and they refuse point blank to pay for pet boarding. I will look more into detail about plans and prices and will try persuade them. I do have a friend who’s rabbit very recently died, she knows how to care for a rabbit and still has an enclosure, food etc. I have been calling around like crazy to different people but would you say if pet boarding is definitely not happening, that’s the way to go?

I think a month is a long time for her to have such limited interaction. It would be good if someone could try and spend some time with her each day so she doesn’t get lonely.

I would also recommend writing detailed plans for whoever does end up looking after her, including ‘the treat test’ – so the person looking after her offers her a treat (doesn’t have to be a treat, just something that she loves to eat – herbs, pellets, lettuce etc) and if she refuses it, then they know its unusual and she needs further monitoring and a vet visit.

Is your neighbour happy to clean the hutch as well? Again, write instructions and stress the importance of a clean hutch for preventing things like fly strike.

I think that is a great idea to have your friend watch your bun! Since she must know all the ins and outs of a bunny, and if she has a place in her house for your bun, that’s even better so she can spend quality time with your baby

I think having the friend would be ideal… I absolutely would not leave the rabbit with the neighbor for a month. Do you have a local rabbit rescue? Maybe you can call them and ask if they have any volunteers that could check on the bun. I’m sure they would charge you something, but likely a lot cheaper than boarding.

update. Turns out things got a little bit muddled up and my mom will not be going with us, so she will be at home and taking care of boo. But she will have to go on a business trip for 11 days in the middle of august. For those 11 days I have no other  choice but to get my neighbours to come over, since that friend I had in mind is also on holidays at that time. I have already started calling my neighbour round daily to start  educating her and teaching her how to give medicine etc. (she’s a lovely old woman who loves animals and is completely willing to learn as much as possible about the care of rabbits) I am going to get her to come 3 times a day, I have also taught her the symptoms of potential sickness and told her how to get to our vet. I am very anxious but I’m sure boos in great hands, and 11 days is a big difference from a whole  month. I have complete faith that my neighbour will do the best job she can. Although I will miss my little boo

Note: I’m also planning to install a pet camera so I can see how boos doing from 10,000 miles away

Awesome! Make sure your mom and your neighbor spend lots of time with Boo so she doesn’t get lonely !
