Hi first time bunny mom here. I’ve had her over a year, she’s about 3, she’s fixed, and her name is Lola. Earlier today Lola was just fine eating and pooping all normal but later when I opened her cage (which is in the living room) to let her come out and play she just stayed in her litter box. I left the door open and tried to tempt her with treats but she wouldn’t come out. Then she started laying down flat with her feet kicked out only to get back up and immediately lay back down. That was very odd behavior for her so I went over and started petting her and found her shaking which she has never done before. Then she started making noise that was loud enough to hear across the room. During all this she still pooped and it was normal so I decided to try and rub her belly thinking it was gas. Every time I would rub her belly the shaking would get worse so I tried the other trick (not sure what it’s called) where you hold there butt up. When I did that she started to relax and I could feel gurgles so I kept doing it off and on for about 15 minuets. After that she seemed to get a little spunk back so I put her down in the floor and it was like there was never a problem. She was doing her fast runs and and acting completely normal. It’s been about 2 hours and her belly doesn’t seem to be tender anymore she doesn’t shake when I touch it. She’s chowing down on food and has peed and pooped. My question is should I be worried? Should I give her gas medicine or keep the tummy rubs going or is she fine now?

It seems very likely that it was gas. I think I’d give her 0.5-1 ml simethicone baby gasdrops, but hold off on other treatment as long as she stays symptom free.

Buns can get gas from stress or when they’re about to start a big shed or – rather obviously – of they’ve eaten sth that didn’t agree with them. My bun once found an apple on the floor and ate a big part of it, and gas ensued.

Isolated episodes of gas can often be resolved with simethicone and light massage + elevation of the butt.
