Hello all! So sorry if this has already been addressed, but i have looked around and cant seem to find the answer. I have a very sweet indoor bunny named hydra and this morning i noticed she had something brown on her nose. When i picked her up, i saw her entire bottom was very dirty and her genitals are very inflamed and huge. This was strange, because her cage is very clean and the other three girls are clean on their bottoms.

I googled it and as soon as i saw the possibility of it being vents disease, i isolated her. She was a little dirty and i had no other cages so i put her in a fenced area with a box. (I let them round around outside daily, so i didnt see a huge problem with letting her sit as a temporary residence)

I will take her to the vet, but because of where i live, the local vet does not treat rabbits. I am on the search for a vet that will, and hope to take her today or tomorrow. I feel awful. In the mean time, i am looking for ways to ease her discomfort and prepare for the next steps.

        I am freaking out!

What should i do? I feel bad isolating her, but if its vents disease then it may be very contagious. All of my bunnies are girls, and have never been bred so i dont understand how she could have caught syphilis.

Does anyone have any idea what it could be? Also should i try to clean up the area or will it cause her further discomfort.

Attached are pictures of her current situation.

It’s good that you’ve isolated her. Are you in Europe or in the USA?

I think you should clean her downstairs quarters. Urine and fecal matter and dirt makes just about everything worse. Be very gentle though and pat the area dry, also very gently. A microfiber towel is probably the most effective.

Is the brown on her nose a scab? How do her eyes look? Does she have an appetite?

It sounds like you put her outside in a fenced area, if I understand what you wrote. A rabbit with a dirty bottom should never be outside. That would be a huge draw to flies, and you certainly don’t want to be dealing with fly strike. It’s very serious and can be fatal. She needs to be inside. There must be some place where you can keep her apart from the others. Maybe a bathroom? I hope you can get her to a vet soon and that she’ll be okay.

Yes, Tobyluv is correct, I missed that you isolated her outside. She should not be outside. Sticky poop, pee, dirt and/or moist compromised skin/sores are all risk factors for fly strike. Fly strike is horrible and must be avoided.

She should be isolated from the others until she’s been seen by a vet, but she needs to be indoors.

How long have they been together? Did they come from the same litter? Syphilis can be passed from mother to kit. It can also remain asymptomatic for long periods of time. So if it is Syphilis, then it’s likely she has had it for a while now. The others may have it too.

I agree, clean her up and keep her inside. You don’t want her to get fly strike.
