So, I got my 2 lionheads spayed yesterday and they seem to be doing great. Eating, pooping, peeing. Their poop is a little small but it’s there! And they are really interested in cilantro. Had some hay and a few pellets as well. They slept a lot when I brought them home but today they’re up and moving around more. Both have metacam and an antibiotic. Hazel has been grinding her teeth loudly occasionally for just a few seconds. She’s not hunched in a corner and has been moving around and pooping. Could it just be that she is sore from the spay even with the metacam? I’m not concerned otherwise. She seems to be recovering really well. Just curious what you guys think!

That’s great that they are eating and pooping!
The tooth grinding does indicate pain, though. You should have their space restricted a bit so they can’t jump around, which you prob already know? Metacam is equivalent of ibuprofen, so it might not be strong enough. Spaying is a major surgery, so the metacam takes the edge off, but isn’t full relief. What is the dosing frequency? If your interval is every 24 hrs and you notice more grinding when she is due for a dose, you can ask your vet about splitting the dose into two and giving every 12 hours. If you notice her deteriorating or grinding more, I would def call the vet and see if she can get a stronger pain med, and also make sure she hasn’t pulled a suture or anything.

Thanks for your reply! Well, in the last few hours she stopped grinding her teeth. Both Hazel and Sofia are now pigging out on hay and veggies and pooping up a storm. The vet is having me give metacam every 12 hours. But she seems fine now. And her incision looks awesome. What a relief!
