Nich I am very concern for my rabbit’s behavior. His mate just passed away from sudden death. At first, he was being cheerful like his normal self, but several hours passed and now he has become inactive. Usually, when I let him out of his cage, he would run around my room, exploring, but now he just sat at a corner quietly. He also refuses my cuddling and stops responding to my touch. Is he lonely and mourning or is it possible that he has caught his late mate illness and should be taken to a vet? What shall I do now to help him recover? Thank you very much in advance.

Did you give Nich some time to spend with his mates body? It’s possible he’s confused and thinks he’s been abandoned. I would still take him to the vet though. Long term I would just spend time on the floor with him. You don’t have to interact with him, just being near him should be good enough.

Thank you for your reply. I did let him spend some time with the late bunny’s body for at least an hour, but he just seems disinterested. He just sniffed her body and moved away, running around as usual. This evening when I lie down next to him, he just snuggled up next to me for several minutes and just lie there instead of licking me or jumping around as he usually does. But if he does not get better by tomorrow, I would consider taking him to a vet.

Agreed, if you don’t know what the cause of death is, it’s sensible to take the other bun to the vet to make sure it wasn’t infectious. Where are you based? In Europe and Australia there are some very nasty diseases that cause sudden rabbit death.

Did he get to spend any time with the body?

Keep encouraging him to eat, and like H&T said, spend some time on the floor with him, and let him come to you if he wants to. A stuffed toy might also help him.
