My rabbit Charlotte (who is a lionhead) is 6 1/2 and I am aware she is getting old now as she is only expected to live to 8. Since she was young, she has always been very good and never chewed anything outside of her ‘area’ (open cage) because of this, she is allowed to free roam. However, recently I have been concerned about her as she has been ripping out the carpet from her favourite room (where she spends most of her time). We have tried various ways of trying to stop this but nothing has worked so we have decided to put bars around her personal area so that she is unable to free roam. It breaks my heart to have to do this to her but I have no choice. If anyone knows why she may be displaying this behaviour or how to stop it please to not hesitate to respond.

        – many thanks!

          Hi Funny Bunny

With a new behaviour coming on after her not doing it all her life, I’d suspect there could be a health issue behind it. Anything from some dental discomfort, to arthritic pain or even hormonal changes. Is she desexed at all? Unspayed, older female rabbits can develop some changes and are at high risk of uterine cancer and other uterine disorders. Having said that, even desexed bun can develop some hormonal-like behaviours as they age. My lop (11 1/2) did when he reached age six. I call him my Benjamin Button Bunny as he came to me aged 2 and acted like an old-man bunny, then as he got older, he became more like a young buck!

ETA: Many textbooks still put rabbit life expectancy at around 7-8 years. But these days, we see a lot more rabbits living longer.

Apart from what jerseygirl mentioned, if your bunny is ripping off the carpet in the same spot, you could try putting something heavy (e.g. a piece of tile) on top so she can’t get to it.
