So, recently i have been looking for a new living area for Onyx or Rosalie. Basically, Rosalie’s cage is too small and Onyx has been needing a new cage anyway. Even though i don’t have the space now, i will in a few weeks when i move. I found a Pine indoor hutch for sale near me that looked really good, but its too big to be able to fit in my new room/house. That’s when i decided to build a custom one myself, that way i can get it exactly right.  I’m pretty excited for it.

I did some research (a lot was on here lol) about the right kinds of woods and ones to avoid, different designs, how much ventilation they’d need, etc. But i still have a few questions. It’s going to be for two bunnies in the future, after Rosalie is spayed and they are bonded, but for now its going to be just for one bunny. How much room should two bunnies have in a single enclosure? The space I’m going to put it in is about 50 inches wide, it used to be a closet but i had them take it out to open the room up.

Onyx is going to be using it first and he is about 3 pounds. Rosalie is expected to get between 3 and 4, so they aren’t big bunnies. I’m also thinking of making it two stories, but not super sure. Are there any stains, paints, or things to seal the wood, that are safe for bunnies? I read something about milk paint being safe.

What kind of flooring should i put in? Onyx is giving me trouble with litter training, and just goes where ever. Luckily he isn’t a chewer and is okay with puppy pads, but Rosalie will chew up anything. I was thinking rubber waterproof flooring, but also read vinyl is a good option? Onyx has difficulty with his cage now, because he can’t get a grip on the floor and slips around. Would Vinyl be too smooth? Are there any other options for flooring that is easy to clean?

I’m pretty sure ill be using Pine, which i read is fine as intact wood, I’m just worried Rosalie will chew on it, is there anything i can do to prevent her chewing on it too much? I know its inevitable, i just don’t want her or Onyx to ingest or be exposed to it. I have a strong feeling she is going to be more of a destruct-o bunny than Pumpkin. (RIP to all the computer mice, phone chargers, remotes, dog gates and blankets/clothes Pumpkin has put to sleep.)

Sorry for the long post, i just want to start getting the design ready and get the supplies semi-together before we move in that way they have a brand new house to explore in no time.

Two small bunnies need at least 2 square meters on a single level. If you have one side that’s 125 cm wide (that’s what 50 inch is according to Google, I’m better with the metric system haha) then your other side needs to be at least 160 cm (that’s 62 inches according to Google). Just take that into account. Of course you can build a smaller cage in that closet area and have a pen around it.

There are smooth vinyls and more rough vinyls, you may want to feel it when picking vinyl out. I’m guessing your current cage has a plastic bottom, vinyl is definitely less slippery than that. My bunnies are completely fine on vinyl, even crybaby Muffin that won’t tolerate my wooden floors. It’s also very easy to clean, just vacuum and mop it and you’re good to go. I heard people like using foam mats (covered or not covered by fleece). I’m not too sure how well that holds up with bunnies peeing on it though. I’ve always imagined it would soak through and stink, but that’s just my thoughts.

If your bunnies are chewers, I’m not sure how you can protect the wood. I know people like building rabbit cages out of pens and other wire/metally objects (I think some people even use some kind of office grid thingy), though. Those are unchewable.

I have vinyl on the floor of my hutch and it works great! It isn’t completely smooth, it has some texture on it and my bunnies don’t seem to mind, they move around fine. The only thing is I tried to make it so it went up the walls about 2 inches so it would keep in all the hay, stray poop, etc. Rain has chewed this part quite a bit (she doesn’t eat it) which means it has failed to do it’s job, so I haven’t solved that part lol.
