Whenever I’m with Toby, I always see him reaching down and sticking his head in his butt. When his head comes back up he’s chewing. Once I saw some liquid poop on the carpet and he ate it. It didn’t look like cocos. It looked like a long wet poop that was shaped like a cocoon with a caterpillar in it lol. Also, I found hay that he loves but my parents are refusing to buy it. They saw all the SPS hay that I had (he doesn’t like SPS so it’s just laying in a box in a room) and said how wasteful he was. They said they won’t tolerate spending all that money on hay and him not eating it. Now he’s having to eat the hay he hates. He’s still pooping but his poops have become darker and maybe a tad bit smaller. He is pooping a lot which is good.

Can someone tell me what the wet cocoon shape poos are that he keeps eating? Also, will he be ok by having to eat hay he hates?

Rabbits produce two types of poops. The normal ones and then ones called cecotropes which look like a tiny cluster of grapes. They often eat them directly from their butt so that’s what you’re seeing.

Yes he will be okay eating hay he hates as long as he is eating it. That is what is important. And if he is eating it, then he probably doesn’t hate it that much. But he may prefer something else if given the option. Most important thing is that he is actually eating the hay.

And yes…the “Grapes of Wrath” as Janice called them. Cecotropes. I remember the first time I saw that, mouth to butt, then fervently chewing like she had a mouthful of peanut butter. Thank goodness for the internet or I would have thought there was something really messed up regarding our rabbit.

Is he eating the SPS hay at all or not touching it completely? If he’s not eating any you really need to get something that he will eat, hay is very important. Even if you perhaps e-mail SPS and ask them for samples of different types of hay so that you could figure out which one he likes best. If he is eating the hay he may just be reluctant but he’ll get used to it. Are you feeding a lot of pellets as well? Maybe he’s just filling up on pellets instead of eating the hay?

Sorry for such a late response I’ve been very busy!!
But regarding the poops, I’ve seen cecotropes. the thing he’s pooping doesn’t come in a grape cluster. Its just shaped like a cocoon. It doesn’t look like cecotropes.

As far as the hay, he’s eating but not much at all but he eats a very minimum about.. I loved to see him devour his old Timothy hay that he loved until my parents decided not to let me buy it anymore. His poops are getting smaller. He also is always asking me for food throughout the day and I feel bad. He always looks hungry. I wish my parents would just let me buy the hay he likes…

Some cecotropes aren’t grape clusters. Wick’s can sometimes just be really smooshy regular poop.
