Hey there, i just wanted to share my experience with re-bonding after a surgery.
We have one bonded pair, Pumpkin (female) and Benson (male). Before they bonded (two years or so ago), Benson was neutered but Pumpkin only recently got spayed this year. When she did, she spent two or three weeks recovering in a cage when before she free roamed our kitchen with her partner.
After she was healed enough to start running around again, Benson acted like he didn’t know her at all even though he wouldn’t leave her cage door and would only eat by her cage. He would grunt/snort and scratch at her when they were face-to-face. She was so startled that she wouldn’t come out of the cage. The cage we had set up for her didn’t have a top to it.
But one night after reintroducing them during a car ride, she hopped out of the cage and overnight they were back to being inseparable. Even though we wanted to wait another two weeks so that the hormones were out of her system, but she kept hopping out of the cage to get back to Benson. So we decided to stop putting her in it to keep her from straining herself.
After a month has passed since their surgeries, and they are all healed up, i suggest bringing them to a neutral territory to do re-introductions and go from there depending on how it went.
Pumpkin and Benson originally bonded in two days (no joke) but it took about two weeks to re-bond them and two car rides.
