I’m really struggling with Georges chewing habits at the moment.

He has an issue where his front teeth grow quicker than normal so his has them clipped by the vet every few weeks, however it’s also important for him to chew. However regardless of what wooden toys I give him he just isn’t interested. He has willow balls, cardboard, pinecones etc. I’ m constantly buying him new things to try but he just doesn’t want them instead chewing on my shoes, anything plastic or made of material and my hair, and it’s driving me nuts. Obviously I stop him chewing these things as I know they can be dangerous but what can I do to get him chewing his own toys? Any suggestions greatly appreciated as I’m losing my mind!

        Thanks.

I’ve heard that bunnies like to chew things that have resistance, which is why they often pull out strands of carpet, because they like to tug at it. Perhaps you could try tying willow balls or other wooden toys to something so that he has some resistance and can pull away at them without them just rolling or being pushed away.

You could also try hiding treats or pellets in willow balls – he may end up chewing the willow balls and discovering it’s delicious while he tries to get to the treats.

Have you tried apple twigs? Most bunnies go crazy for apple twigs.

There’s also hay mats that often go down well.

Is he a good hay eater?

Apple twigs and more hay might help. You can also try the resistance thing, hope this helps.

Cardboard boxes work amazing because they sit in them and rip the cardboard and them sitting in it has the resistance they like and destroy them in days haha

My Julep loves the grass mats. She will sit on one end and pull and chew at the other end. She likes the resistance from her own weight. She also enjoys cardboard boxes. If George isn’t interested in the box, you can always create a dig box with cardboard strips and he might end up chewing on it that way. Good luck!

I’ve tried it all. The treats in willow balls, the resistance, cardboard boxes and digging boxes. I’ll look into the Apple twigs though, I tried him on willow and other safe twigs but he just wasn’t interested. Thank you all though. He’s going to the Vets again tomorrow as he’s snapped a tooth today so needs it removed, maybe he’ll be more interested after, but I’ve had him a month now and he’s never been interested. I’ve haven’t had this issue with all my other bunnies so I’m a little clueless. I’ve heard about hard hay bales which I’ll also give a go.

Ah, that’s a shame. Perhaps it is related to tooth discomfort, but then it’s weird that he’d chew other things like shoes…

Yes, hay cubes/cookies could be a good idea. My bunnies love them, but they make a horrible mess, so I’m mean and don’t give them to them very often!

Isn’t it! I’m so baffled by it.

Also upate, we went to the Vets today, he has broken his tooth but everything seems fine and it will grow back, the vet was so helpful.
