Potato is 9 months old and around 4 pounds. He eats 1/4 cup of adult pellets, unlimited timothy hay, fresh vegetables, and Ox Bow’s Simple Rewards from time to time. The vet speculates that he’s probably a mix between a Lionhead and Norwegian dwarf. The last time he visited the vet was 3 months ago for his neutering procedure. Since then, I think he’s lost quite a bit of weight. Although he looks fluffy and well fed, when I run my hands down his back, I can easily feel his spine and the bumps on it. I pretty much can feel all of his bones without pressing. He eats all of his food but always acts like he’s hungry. I’m not worried that he’s sick, that’s why I haven’t take him to the vet yet. His behavior is the same and he’s very active. He sprints very fast everyday and gets a lot of exercise.

My question is, should I feed Potato more pellets?

1/8 to 1/4 pellets daily should be fine, has he been eating a lot of hay and veggies?

Hey there! I recommend taking him in anyway, just in case there is something wrong. But he sounds like a very active bun!

I would get some Critical Care, and feed that to him for a while (a week or two) to help him gain weight. I’ve heard that it helps put weight on. I can’t get my hands on Critical Care right now, so I’m feeding my 4 year old bun Young bunny pellets from Oxbow (I’m getting a baby bun tomorrow, so i had them already). He has gained weight on it, i just think it takes longer.

I know they sell Critical Care on Amazon, they even have an apple & banana flavor. Some buns don’t like the taste of the original.

You could try feeding him more pellets (but if he overproduces cecotropes then it should be cut down). There could be a lot of reasons for weight loss though, so continue to observe and see if his weight still drops after the increased pellet intake. Look out for other signs of ill health as well.

My bunny recently lost half his weight within a few weeks. His appetite and water intake had increased suddenly – he was peeing a lot and his poop size started to get irregular despite the increased hay intake. We took him to the vet because one day we realised he looked so skinny…and they found out he had a liver problem (possibly caused by E. cuniculi). He’s on medication now and is improving.

TLDR; you can feed him more pellets for now but look out for other changes in Potato as well

If he’s losing weight on a healthy diet then he could be sick. Intestinal parasites (worms) come to mind and I thunk it’s probably worth having a chat to your vet about.

Does his spine feel boney and sharp, or blunt and rounded? You should be able to feel the spine but it shouldn’t feel sharp.
