So Zane became a single bun when Annie passed last Sunday. He is adjusting alright – he is neighbors with Harley so he has someone to bunny with.

Zane has always been a clean bunny. But I noticed today he is filthy! He has stains on his face, sides, and tummy (but his butt is clean). He’s a white bun mostly, so it’s pretty noticeable. He’s been sleeping in his litter box a lot, so it’s likely from this.

My question is, is bunny depression similar to human depression and hygiene goes? Or do bonded bunnies have to readjust to self care after losing an attentive mate?

Whilst I’ve never dealt with an animal dealing with losing a friend, I imagine grief and depression can manifest in many different ways. A lack of grooming or general hygiene wouldn’t be totally bizarre I don’t think. Is he acting differently too or is it just the hygiene thing?

I’m sorry for your loss or Annie I don’t know if you made a thread about it but if so, I must have missed it. Binky on Annie xx

He’s acting mostly ok. He’s gotten somewhat….aggressive? Or grouchy maybe. He used to love snuggles, but now acts like I’m a giant chew toy and has bitten both me and my husband. Not viscious biting, just like, he seems to think we’re giant raisins lol. He seems passive with Harley, which we expected. So aside from being more assertive and the hygiene thing, he seems normal. Annie was pretty high strung, so maybe he’s making up for lost tension.

If Annie had always groomed him, then I think without her, Zane would be somewhat confused on what to do with all the filth himself. As for the aggressiveness, perhaps he was in his own world with Annie for such a long time that when she left, he doesn’t quite know how to go back to being a single bun with humans as his mates now and don’t know what to think of you two yet in this new situation?
