        Hello everyone!

I’m Jenna and I’m new to the forums. I have a very handsome bunny named Hercules (but his nickname is BunBun lol). He is almost 5 years old and a lop-eared rabbit. A couple of days ago, I noticed his head was slightly tilted to one side, so of course, I brought him over to my vet. He cleaned out some gunky stuff from one of his ears, the other was clean. His eyes and teeth looked normal according to the vet. He prescribed ear drops (Baytril) 4 drops, two times a day… and then oral antibiotics daily (Enrofloxacin – which I’m seeing is also Baytril). I’m mashing a tiny piece of banana for his medicine and luckily, he’s licked the bowl clean the past two days. I’m very thankful for that. I’ve been making sure he has fresh water like always, giving him even more hay, and some veggies here and there (I’ve been afraid to give romaine with the recall, so I have spinach and butter lettuce that I’m giving sparingly). He doesn’t seem to want to eat any pellets. Should I be concerned about that? I ordered some Oxbow Critical Care after reading up about it on here. I hope it doesn’t have to come down to that, but if it does, then I’ll gladly give it to him. Anything to make him feel better. Has anyone had the same regimen prescribed for their bun with success? I’ve been reading up all I can about this and the more I do, it’s making me more worried. Please let me know if there is anything else I should be doing and when I should start to see improvements. I’ll do anything to make my BunBun healthy again <3

I don’t have any personal experience with ear infections, but I have had bunnies on that antibiotic for other reasons. It’s possible it’s affecting his appetite, or that the infection and all of that is.

Is his hay intake still good? Are his poops normal (size and amount)? Any change is appetite should be watched carefully. Pellets are often the first to be snubbed when my bunnies have had tummy issues. Critical care is amazing. My bunnies will lick it off a plate (the apple banana flavored one).

You should discuss this with your vet, as you don’t want a stasis bun to deal with on top of the ear infection.

Thanks for the input! He’s eating pellets here and there, but not as much as he usually does. He chews his hay happily so that’s good. I bought some romaine lettuce for him as I see the recall has been lifted by the CDC. He had a nice bowl of that today. He licks his bowl clean when I give him his mashed up banana with his antibiotics. It’s just the pellets that aren’t very appealing to him right now. I’ve never used critical care before, it just came in the mail today. Should I only be using it if he’s not eating anything else I’m giving him? I’m not very familiar with this product (and yes! I got the apple-banana flavored one also). He’s still pooping, but he’s missing his litter box – I think because his balance is off; poor baby  He’s been litter-boxed trained ever since he was young.

I’ll definitely give my vet a call and ask him about everything. Thank you again

Critical care is very nutritious, so I would try offering some and see if he likes it. You might even be able to give him his meds mixed in it, that way he gets a bit more nutrition other than banana. He might even be less interested in his pellets because he’s getting full on the banana?
