Well, the inevitable happened – the dig box I made is being used as a litter box
The majority of their poops and pees is in their actual litter boxes but the occasional few (or piles of) poops are finding their way in the dig box. Is there a way to discourage this or is it just something that usually happens and I just deal with it? I use wood pellets in the dig box and also in the litter box so I can understand their confusion. I’ve started using a grate on their boxes so they can’t actually get to the pellets in the boxes. I thought that might help them distinguish between them but no luck -

I was going to ask you about this Sarah, because Sam’s gotten quite diggy lately so I was wondering how your dig box was going!You’re right, it’s probably because it’s the same type of litter so they’re just seeing it as an additional litter box ;p
Are they still using it to dig in?
Could you use a different type of litter in it (eg recycled paper) to help aid the confusion?
Buttercup is digging in it occasionally but she seems to have lost her mojo
Actually, saying that, she’s been digging at a cardboard box quite a bit the last few days Peanut hasn’t dug in the dig box at all but he never dug in the litter box either. He prefers the cardboard box lol.I’d love to use soil or something but I couldn’t find any that didn’t have any nutrients added. I thought about trying paper based but I used to use paper bedding (carefresh) in their litter trays prior to the wood pellets so that might be equally as confusing for them!

Sam actually prefers digging fabrics – old blankets, towels, my sweatshirt, my bedclothes… ;p so perhaps you could encourage them to try that?I did actually used to have a digging corner set up with a pile of fleece blankets which worked wonders…then Peanut started peeing on them

When I saw it, I did wonder how it hadn’t turned into a giant litter tray!What about sand? I know it’ll probably make a horrible mess, but….
I don’t mind the mess
I did a bit of research tho and I believe it was Azerane that mentioned sand can cause infections in their genitalia. I’m not sure how common it is but it put me off a bit.

That’s what I was worried would happen if I gave my buns a dig box haha. If you find a way to stop it please let me know!
